Mohawks seem to be lacking the fundamentals
By Fred Groves
EXETER - If the Exeter Mo-
hawks want to win hockey games,
they are going to have to start
working on the basics.
Saturday night they had trouble
passing and playing proper defence
as they lost their third Senior 'A'
hockey game of the season, 4-3 to
the Dunnville Mudcats.
Although the Mohawks got on
the board first when Joe Scherer
nuscled his way in and got a back-
hander past Garnet Wilson, and al-
though they did outshoot the Mud -
cats 37-21 they couldn't get it all
together.
"We had a few guys who didn't
come to play hockey tonight," po-
litely put by Exeter coach Dave
Revington.
From the defencemen to the for-
wards, the Mohawks made very
few good, crisp passes. A habit
they seem to be getting in W.
"ifs non existent, just like it was
in Aylmer," said Revington.
On Tuesday, the Mohawks edged
Aylmer Hornets 4-3 as Greg Snyd-
er scored twice with singles from
Craig Oster and Scherer.
"We're not moving the puck with
authority. I don't know if its lack of
skill or lack of confedence?, asked
a puzzled Revington.
After Scherer made it 1-0, mid-
way through the first frame on a
nice pass by Snyder, Dunnville's
Closing In on Dunnville goalie Garnet Wilson in Saturday's Senior A game was Mohawks for-
ward Joe Scherer. Exeter is having trouble winning as they were edged 4-3 by the visiting Mud -
cats.
Pat Holley got his first of two of
the night.
With Dave Wilson in the penalty
box, Dunnville's Craig Surridge let
one go from the point to give his
team the lead which they would not
give up.
The third Dunnville goal was a
definite example of lack of the ba-
sics by Exeter.
Bill Glover won the faceoff and
while trying to get it back behind
him, Holley got to the puck quite
easily and walked in alone on Rick
Pikul.
"Our leftwinger didn't pick him
up and our defence were caught
flatfooted," said Revington.
Two goal night: Gord Brooks
pulled the Mohawks to within one
when he went to the side of the net
fora Bill Glover pass and patiently
waited before shooting.
But with Wilson in the box again,
Paul Tyne netted what proved to be
the winner with about 11 minutes
left in the game. Revington pulled
Pikul with 1:23 left and it paid off
as Brooks let go with one high in
the slot but Dunnville managed to
hold them off.
Exeter tried to get some offence
going in the game as Revington
didn't hesitate to go down to two
lines for a while in the second peri-
od and making sure his high scor-
ing line of Snyder, Oster and Scher-
er got lots of ice time.

PT. STANLEY - Although this is
supposed to be a rebuilding year,
the Lucan Irish, Ontario finalists a
year ago, remain undefeated as
they sport a 7-0-2 record following
wins last week over Port Stanley,
Belmont and a tie with Alvinston.
On Saturday the Irish beat the
tough Port Stanley Lakers 7-2
thanks in part by a pair of goals
from Greg DePrest.
We still have a •long way to go,"
said Irish coach Ken Needham who
seems a little surprised his team
has yet to lose.
"We have a lot to do yet and eve-
ryone gets tough the second time
around and we haven't played
Mitchell yet."
Tonight in Lucan at 8:15 the Irish
will face the division leading
Mitchell Hawks.
Irish 7, Flyers 7
Lucan managed to salvage a
point out of this one but it wasn't
pretty on or off the ice.
After building a 3-1 lead, the
Irish defence stood by and watched
as Alvinstoi,rgittl►iag second
period goals., ta;tfM? lead and

into overtime.
"They scored four goals on four
shots in the second period," said
Needham who said goalie Mark

Dunn did not play well.
Lucan's defencemen looked con-
fused and did not give Dunn much
support when it came to picking up
their man in front of the net. In the
third period, Needham put convert-
ed forward Ed VanKerkoerle back
on the blueline.
Alvinston received four goals
from Jeff Leyten who also set up
Dean McEachern's overtime tally.
It was 6-6 after regulation and 54
seconds into the five minute over-
time, Lucan's Dean Hammond
pounced on a rebound.
But with 1:44 left in the over-
time, McEachern found the puck
and let go with a trickier that got
past Dunn who lost it in his skates.
The Flyers came into the game with
just two wins while the Irish were
undefeated in their first seven.
"I think they played well. Maybe
it was a case of taking them too
easy. You're going to have to earn
every two points you get," said
Needham.
Besides Hammond, Steve Mat-
thews had a big night with three
goals while Paul Woodburn , had a
pair and (call and fund this out)
After the game Lucan captain
Andy Ross and Alvinston's Greg
Garside got into fight while shak-
ing hands which saw several
punches thrown.
Irish forward Darren Neil, not
dressed for Friday's game was in-
volved in a fight with a spectator
moments after Ross and Garside
were battling on the ice.
Also not suited up for the Irish
was Jon McEachern who arrived
late for the game.
Irish 5, Pests 3
A balanced scoring attack saw
the Irish get tallies from Greg Muir,
Ross, Brad Bowers, VanKerkoerte
and Scott Woodburn.
McEachern had a big night with
three assists.

two points from the Mohawks.
"If you win all the home games
you're 300. If you win on the road,
that's a bonus," said Porter whose
team beat Exeter 6-3 earlier this
season.
New look: There were only five
minor penalties per team called by
referee Ivan Bryce as the Mudcats,
known to be a team that likes to
nought it up, seems to have changed
their ways.
The only heated moments in the
game came when Oster was
pushed into Wilson which got a
couple of Wilson's teammates up-
set.
"I don't play that way. I don't be-
lieve in it. You don't win games in
the penalty box," said Porter.
According to the Mohawks,
Dunnville's Gerry McSorley who
got more than one of the Exeter
players upset last year, is not being
allowed to play by the Ontario
Hockey Association.
"It's out of my hands. Apparently
they've polled the league and they
don't want him," said Porter.
He said if McSorley was to join
the team it would have to_he_u der -
some conditions.
"You can't say he can't play or
