Hawks win one, lose two
By Ray Lewis
EXETER - The Exeter Hawks
were in tough this weekend as they
dropped two out of three games in
OHA Development (Junior 'D')
league action. Exeter split a home
and home series with the Seaforth
Centennaires and lost Saturday's
contest at home to Belmont.
The Hawks seem to have trouble
on the road as they are currently 2-
5-0, and this year's schedule doesn't
favour them. The locals are play-
ing .500 hockey in the friendly
confines of their own arena, but are
on the road for ten of their first six-
teen games.
The only consolation is the fact
that they can look forward to a
couple of long home stands after
Christmas, including one that will
begin at the all-star break and see
Exeter host eight of their final nine
regular season games.
Exeter 2, Seaforth 7
The Hawks had no trouble with
the Centennaires Friday night at
home, but Sunday's afternoon con-
test in Seaforth was the complete
opposite. After a very even two
periods, Exeter gave up four unan-
swered goals in the third to lose the
game 7-2.
"We played well the first two pe-
riods," said Hawks co -coach
George Pratt. "We just didn't have
the desire to win."
The home team jumped out to an
early 1-0 lead in the first period,
but the Hawks fought back to tie
things up in the second.

they lost by twice as many points.
The main reason for the better
game was the concentration and fo-
cus that was displayed by the team.
Kerry Manders led the team, net-
ting six points.
The juniors had a good game
against the Huskies, coming up
shortby a score bf li725. Inspit of
a Stranger second'ialf the team was
unable to outplay their opponents.
Chris Passmore and Niccole Eccles
led the team, scoring six poits each.
The midget Panthers also had
trouble with the Huskies team, los-
ing by a score of 55-24. Tara Pep-
per played well for the team, scor-
ing eight points, while Danielle
Miners, Kathryn Hem nd Karey
Youmans each added four points.
Steve Vandenberk buried a Nick
Wieckowski pass just over a min-
ute into the second, and Exeter
looked to be back on track.
But Seaforth regained the lead
two minutes later, and added a
powerplay goal at the 11 minute
mark with Dave Dalrymple off for
slashing.
Scott Schiedel brought the
Hawks to within one at period's
end, when he teamed up on the
powerplay with Larry Lewis and
Alan Blommaert.
In the third period however, with
Exeter threatening to tie, Seaforth
turned things up a notch and sur-
prised the locals with a four goal
outburst that silenced the Hawks.
Josh Symons started in net for the
locals, as John Teahen has been
called up by the St. Marys Junior
'B' Lincolns.
"He played really well for his
first game," said Pratt of Symons.
"But our defense seemed to have
trouble picking up their men."
Exeter 3, Belmont 4
Despite a strong defensive effort,
and a three point night for Doug
Clark, Exeter came up short in a 4-
3 loss to the Pests in Belmont Sat-
urday.
"We played a solid game," said
Pratt. "We made some mistakes
and were missing some guys, but
penalties were what hurt us."
Trailing 1-0, Dave Dalrymple put
Exeter on the board, with help from
Clark and speedster Mark Reid.
With a minute left in the period,
some hard work by Scott Schiedel
paid off when he teamed up with
Clark to set up John Bell.
Clark scored the third goal for the
Hawks with four seconds remain-
ing.
Exeter 7, Seaforth 3
Ray Cousineau paced a strong
Exeter attack Friday at home as the
Hawks dealt the visiting Centen-
naires a 7-3 drubbing. Cousineau
scored three times and Clark twice
in a physical contest that featured
some fine netminding by Clint
McCann.
Also scoring for the locals were
Reid and Schiedei.
