National 4H Week salutes the members OTTAWA - 4-11 is... beef and breadmaking, fitness and farm safety, social recreation and veteri- nary science. 4-H is also personal development, community leader- ship and responsible citizenship, and it has grown to be one of the premiere youth organizations in Canada. National 4-11 week, No- vember 4 - 10, celebrates the ac- complishments of the past year and honours the thousands of 4-11 members, and volunteer leaders all across the country who contribute to the success of the program. National 4-11 week is an annual event which acknowledges 4-H members and leaders past and present, salutes the milestone they have achieved and the contribu- tions they have made to agricul- ture, their communities and rural Canada. The week's activities in- clude a national public awareness campaign, two national conferenc- es and the Friends of 4-H Banquet held in Toronto, plus a host of oth- er special events and activities or- ganized by provincial and local 4- H organizations. The impact of the 4-H program and its members is the major focus of this year's National 4-11 Confer- ence - "4-H Youth... Making a Difference." Conference sessions are de- signed to develop the skills which will enable them to lead the 4-H program and its members into the 21st century. Both conferences will feature seminars, workshops and social events such as a mystery theatre, attendance at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair and a ban- quet in Toronto's China Town. The high point of the week's ac- tivities is the evening of Friday, November 8. Delegates from both conferences join 4-H sponsors, Foundation trustees, past presi- dents, honourary members and cor- porate and association member rep- resentatives of the Canadian 4-11 Council for the annual Friends of 4-11 Banquet, a long-standing tradi- tion where 4-11 friends and sup- porters gather together for an eve- ning of dining, presentations and entertainment in the true spirit of the fun and fellowship that is 4-11. 4-11 has been serving Canada's rural youth for more than 75 years, providing relevant agricultural and leadership skills. The organization looks to the 21st century with con- fident in its ability to continue meeting the needs of rural youth by focusing on knowledge, leadership, citizenship and personal growth. Brinsley 4-H "Dairy Dolls" BRINSLEY - The Brinsley 4-H club had their first meeting Tuesday, October 8 with 23 members present. The group's name is the Dairy Dolls. For roll call they answered with something they ate frorn,the milk food group. They discussed how they can keep their club on track and discussed the four major food groups. Several of the members made nachos and vegetable pizza for the group to enjoy. They took home chicken bones to put in vinegar to test the reac- tion of bones in acid. The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m. Second meeting The second meeting of the Brinsley's "Milk Makes It Better" 4-11 club was held on Tuesday, October 15 and began at 7:15 p.m. With one mem- ber missing, they began the pledge. Next was the roll call "What type of milk is commonly used in your family and how is it used?" The most pop- ular answer was two percent but whole milk was also included. Uses con- sisted of recipes, coffee, cereals and many more. After this they read and filled in the activities from their books. Next they tried a variety of milk. Chocolate was the favourite. Along with the milk, they sampled some of the 4-11 recipes made by the mem- bers. The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m. The Milk Muskateers gather in Dashwood DASHWOOD - Dashwood 4-11 held their second meeting last Monday at Karen Kinsman's house. All members were present with a roll call of eight. The two boys of the 4-11 club had their turn cooking. They chose to make old fashioned pudding. The cold batch wasn't so good but the hot batch proved to be quite tasty. During the rest of the meet- ing everyone sampled different types of milk and guessed what kinds they were. Some of the kinds they sampled were one percent milk, two percent milk and butter- milk. Everyone Was asked to name a specific type of milk that they used at home for drinking and cooking and most answered two percent. The Club then came to a deci- sion on a name, The Milk Muskat- ecrs. The next meeting will be held November 4, at the home of Karen Kinsman.
