A Nintendo Challenge is being planned by the Exeter Optimist Club. Putting up posters on
Monday were South Huron recreation director Lynne Farquhar and Optimist president Gerald
Merner. A poster contest was held for Usborne Central School students to promote the
event and was won by J.J. Hem, Elizabeth Kerslake, and Vanessa Bray.
,Optimists bring Nintendo
challenge to Exeter
• EXETER - The gauntlet has
6een thrown down by the Exeter
Optimist Club to video game
!buffs in the area who arc ready to
show off their Nintendo skills.
The Optimists are opening the
South Huron Recreation Centre
to public school students who are
ready to do battle with the Super
Mario video game. Students are
pre -registering this week at Exet-
er Public School, Precious Blood,
Hensall Public School, Usborne
Central, or McCurdy Public
School for the Saturday chal-
lenge, from 9-1 p.m.
This is the first year of the
challenge for the Exeter Opti-
mists', but as Gerald Merner ex-
plained that last year's challenge
virtually swept the nation and the
Ontario finals that were held in
Blyth and attracted as many fas-
cinated parents as competitors.
"There's even a national level
to this thing," said Meurer of
competitors who do well enough
on Saturday to advance to higher
levels of video challenge.
However, most local students
will be more interested that their
one -dollar registration also enti-
tles them to pop and pizza to
calm them in the heat of battle.
The Optimists also enlisted the
support of Usborne Central
School students to help publicize
the event. A poster contest was
held so that posters could go up
in the participating schools.
