Pantherspe for OFSM berth
WOSSA field hockey finals this weekend in Exeter
EXETER - The South Huron
Panthers girls field hockey team
took its first step towards what will
hopefully be another Ontario high
school championship on Thursday
as they easily beat visiting Listow-
el Lords 4-0 in the Huron -Perth
Conference semi-finals.
Yesterday the Panthers hosted
the conference finals and this
weekend will be hosting the West-
ern Ontario Secondary Schools As-
sociation final tournament.
Two years ago the Panthers won
OFSAA, the fust in South Huron
history. Winning the Huron -Perth
title isn't a surprise for the Panthers
as they feel confident about head-
ing to the provincial tournament.
"That's our goal. If we play to-
gether and do our best, we should
go," said left winger Becci Farqu-
har who was with the Panthers.
when they won in 1989.
Against the Lords, South Huron
took a big 3-0 lead in the first half.
Tina Campbell got things rolling
and then Farquhar let go with a
long shot from the left side which
rolled along the goal line where
April Lewis knocked it in.
Farquhar took at least a dozen
short corners, one resulting in the
South Huron Panthers' April Lewis, left; gets ready to take a,shot despite being surrounded by
a pair of Listowel Lords' during Thursday's Huron -Perth semi-final game. Lewis scored a goal
as the Panthers won 4-0.

turned with victories in all three

In senior play, it was a close
game throughout as it was a low -
scoring 10-7 at the half. The Pan-
thers played a very strong defen-
sive game to maintain the lead and
in the end won 26-23. Sheryl Oke
had nine points and Carrie Oke
added six.
A strong second half saw the jun-
iors win 29-23. Chris Passmore had
10 points and Christie McInnes
added eight.
The midget team had less trouble
with Stratford Central as they won
very big 46-19. Karey Youmans led
the offence with 12 points while
Danielle Miners netted eight.
Cross-country)
PETROLIA - A muddy course on
Thursday was a tough one for the
South Huron District High School
runners at Lorne Henderson Park as
they competed in the Western On-
tario Secondary School Association'
cross-country championship. y
The senior boys team ran well
coming in fifth overall. Dan Van•
derlaan placed the highest for the
Panthers with a 13th place finish.
Rounding out the rest of the South
Huron team were, Rob Welsh,
29th; Brett Rideout, 35th; Dave
Schwindt, 38th; Shawn McFalls,
55th; Kevin King, 63rd and Skip
Pavlick, 75th.
Molly McClure, running in the
junior girls race had an outstanding
finish as she was ninth overall.
Volleyball
GODERICH - The midget boys
volleyball team recently competed
in a tournament which saw them
tied for first at the end of round-
robin play.
They lost to Stratford Central in
the semis but then defeated Gode-
rich for third place. Colin Bowers
and Brian McAllister played well
for South Huron.
Last Tuesday the junior spikers
won three straight against Mitchell
15-7, 15-5 and 15-5 but were beat-
en by Goderich 14-16, 9-15 while
winning one game 15-1.

"The other team made too many
mistakes in the circle," said Farqu-
har for all the short corners which
kept Listowel bottled up in their
own end.
South Huron kept the pressure on
in the second half, adding one more
goal as Carla Taylor scored with 30
seconds left in the game.
This year's WOSSA tournament
which begins Friday, usually has
the top two teams from Huron -
Perth but three will be entered this
year because Elgin County lid not
have a team due to the teachers'
strike. Two from Middlesex and
one from Oxford rounds out the
field for the event which will have
the final game on Saturday.
"We get a good draw this year.
We get the second place team from
Middlesex, assuming we win Hu-
ron -Perth," said South Huron coach
Jim Workman.
He hopes to takes his team to To-
ronto for the Ontario finals.
"The girls have another year un-
der their belts and they learned a
lesson at OFSSA last year. We
were flat from the Huron -Perth
semis on."
