By Fred Groves EXETER - It was over in a quick 20 minutes. Friday night in front of a surpris- ingly small crowd, the Lucan Irish skated to an easy 8-2 win over the the Exeter Hawks. It was 4-0 after the first period as the Irish ran their undefeated Onta- rio Development League (Junior 'D') record to 5-0-1. The Hawks continue to slip in the standings as they have lost their last three straight. Hawks coach George Pratt says his team is looking into the future and not at what is directly in front of them. "I think the guys think there is too much pressure to win it all. We're playing too much like indi- viduals," said Pratt. It was 1-0 when Paul Woodburn tapped in a loose puck which got tangled up in Exeter goalie Clint McCann's skates. Woodburn made it 2-0 when he blasted a shot into the top comer past McCann's glove. During the warmup, McCann was knocked to the ice by a hard shot from teammate Shayne Robin- son. His head had a bad bump and the game had to be stopped a couple of times so he could check the wound. "He was ready to play these guys, he's always up," said Pratt. McCann couldn't be blamed for too many of the goals as the Hawks seemed to have their minds focused on other things besides hockey. When they did get a little offence oing, the Irish forwards were corn- ing back or the defence was stand- ing Exeter up at the blueline. Exeter dropped to 3-5 and will hopefully try and turn things around on Friday when they host the Seaforth Centennaires. "The only good thing is it is early in the year. Hopefully we can start to jell as the year goes on," said Pratt. After the rookie Woodburn sprouted the Irish to a two -goal lead, Darren Neil let go with a low ice level shot from Jason Wilson and then 14 seconds later, Wilson got one of his own when the Irish stormed the goal mouth. Wilson, a returnee from last year's OHA finalists, said he is not too surprised that Lucan is unde- feated heading into tonight's game in Lucan against the Belmont Pests. "We deserve to be, especially the way we've been working so hard. It's paying off," said Wilson. Exeter and Lucan meet in the playoffs nearly every year as they are two of the better teams in their division. But Friday, the Hawks did not look like the club of the past. "We were expecting them to be more aggressive," said Wilson. "I was expecting a big difference." He added that although the Irish built a 4-0 first period lead, it wasn't over. "After the first period we had to stay focused and keep working hard." Although Larry Lewis scored just 15 seconds into the second period, it didn't give the Hawks much life as Greg Muir, Neil with another and Jon McEachem made it 7-1. "I thought it would be a close hockey game, like a playoff game. l guess that's why Junior 'D` is so ex- citing," said Irish coach Ken Need- ham. Things were going the Irish way as Scott Amos scored at the buzzer as McEachern got an assist for his third point of the game. Robinson scored with 7:19 left in the third on a powerplay as Wood- burn was in the box for roughing. The Hawks managed to stay out of the box, discipline has been a big problem. "We're not going to win in the penalty box and were trying to stress that," said Pratt. Lucan's Kevin Leitch played a good game as the veteran blueliner stopped both David Dalrymple and Allan Blommaert who made at- tempted rushes. "This is the best all-around game we've played,— said Needham. "1 was pleased with the defensive work tonight." After dropping their first two games of the season, Exeter beat host Dorchester 7-0 Friday night and followed that up with their sec- ond straight win. With Bill Glover in the penalty box and just 2:43 left in the game, Bedard spun around in the corner, fired a pass to Craig Oster and 20 seconds later, Barry Baynham let go with a hard shot from 15 feet out to tie the score. assists. After the goal, Bedard, who is nursing a bad shoulder, jumped high into the air in celebration as the Mohawks are now .500 after four games. "We were lucky. We didn't de- serve to win. We did not have near- ly the effort we had last night (Fri- day)," said Exeter coach Dave Rev- ington. "We didn't play half the game, we weren't hustling. Everytime we went to pass it would hit a skate or something," said Bedard. Bedard, a former Sarnia Junior 'B' defenceman and an ex -Exeter Hawk, delivered the hardest hit of the game when he sent Ingersoll's Ed Wilhelm flying early in the third period. Hot goalie: Throughout most of the game, Noguiera was the differ- ence as he faced 52 shots compared to Exeter's Paul Woolford and Jeff Hill who saw 28. "It's hard to say whether or not he was lucky because he looked like he was in control," said Revington. "I think anytime we outshoot a team two to one and don't come away with a win, you feel cheated." Besides, Bedard, Bay_nham and - Oster, Joe Shaer netted a pair for the Mohawks with singles from Greg Snyder and Greg Payne. At the other end, Duane Harris, Jeff Pearson and Tim Geoffrey had two each for Ingersoll. "I don't think it's disappointing, it's the first game of the season and we're not in game shape," said Fitz- morris. He was more than pleased with Noguiera's efforts. "I thought he was one of the best goalies in the league last year and he will be again this year."
