Every year, up to 25 percent of all vehicles have wintertime starting problems. Over half of that number have repeat problems. When winter temperatures go below 32 de- grees, car batteries have 15 percent less starting power than in 80 degree weather. So the best way to ensure safe winter driving is to check your car before the cold weather sets in. Some pre -winter tune-up tips are: • Have your battery checked by a professional. The worst thing in winter is being stranded on the roadway with a dead battery. • Check tires for uneven tread wear, If they are uneven, check the car's alignment and have it adjusted. If you don't have snow tires, make sure there is plenty of tread on the existing tires. • Flush out the cooling system and place with anti -freeze. • Check the condition of all belts and hoses. The cold temperature causes hoses to dry and crack. Replace any hoses or belts that seem brittle. Top engine protection now; recyclable filter systems next Two new products have been in- troduced that will significantly af- fect engine protection for cars and light trucks now and in the future. Fram Extra Guard was recently introduced with a new line of su- per -high efficiency oil filters, engi- neered to better trap dirt particles in the engine. The company also un- veiled its prototype modular filter/ lubrication system which totally en- capsulates engine oil and the oil fil- ter. Equipped with quick discon- nects, the modular filer/lubrication system assures that oil and filter changes of the future could be per- formed in seconds without any mess, spills or leaks. Filter of today The performance of Extra Guard, the latest advance in filtration tech- nology, is phenomenal. the new media in this filter stops more dirt than the materials in any other lead- ing brand. In fact, the unique glass fiber paper captures an extraordi- nary average 96.2 percent of the most demanding dirt particles the first time the oil passes through the filter before it reaches the engine. That's important because recent national research studies show that oil filter purchasers consider engine protection to be the most signifi- cant attribute of a quality oil filter. According to extensive tests, Ex- tra Guard stops most of the dirt par- ticles in the 10-20 micron range - the size particles that do the most damage to bearings, cylinders and other vital engine parts. To put the 10-20 micron range in perspective, a human hair is about 60 microns thick. Different kinds of dirt Dirt particles below 10 and above 20 microns do hot cause major problems. Tight clearances prevent larger particles from get- ting in between most engine sur- faces, and smaller particles tend to float harmlessly in the film of lit-. brication. Clearly, the Fram Extra Guard oil filter is highly efficient. And filter efficiency is more important than long life - an important dis- tinction. You can have a filter with a longer life than Extra Guard, but if it isn't capturing a high number of harmful particles, then it isn't do- ing the job of protecting the en- gine. Filter of tomorrow As a concept, Allied-Signal's fil- ter of the future addresses environ- mental 'concerns, provides custom- er benefits and suggests attractive options to vehicle designers and engineers. The system, which is based on dry sump lubrication used primari- ly in race cars, is self-contained. the engine oil and the filter are en- capsulated in a module that plugs into a vehicle - under the hood, in the trunk, within a wheel well. The system's commercial availa- bility is contingent on its adoption by vehicle manufacturers. Because the oil and filter stay in the module, a change is as simple at unplugging the oil unit and re- placing it with a freshly charged new one. The used container is tamper- proof, meaning it can only be ser- viced at a qualified service centre. Once service technicians remove the spent oil and filter from the modular container for proper dispo- sal, the container itself can be reused or recycled. A simpler oil change Because the oil and the filter are self-contained, Allied-Signal be- lieves the modular fder/lubrication system is a concept of the 1990s. Not only is it a vast improvement over the current system of oil usage and disposal, it is clean and simple to use. Further, due to elimination of a three -or four -inch deep oil pan, the module suggests a lower hood line, more room under the hood and expanded design and engineering opportunities for vehicle manufac- turers. According to the experts, a growing number of cars on the road today have fuel injection sys- tems. Since a typical fuel injector nozzle opening is only about the diameter of a human hair, it takes just a small amount of varnish buildup to clog it and restrict gas flow. To help clean your fuel injection system of deposits add a fuel addi- tive. If added to a full tank of gas every 1,500 miles, it will help you maintain a clean fuel injection sys- tem and fight deposits. If your car has a carburetor and is difficult to start or suffers from poor performance, the carburetor may have developed deposits. By using a multi-purpose fuel addi- tive, you can help rid the carbure- tor of deposits and keep it clean all year long. This multi -functional additive can even help remove water from the fuel delivery system and reduce the possibility of gas line freeze during frigid months. In addition, several of the newer, high performance engines being produced today are extremely sen- sitive to deposits forming on intake values. Once formed, these deposits are thought to act like a sponge and soak up small amounts of fuel, causing the fuel mixture to "lean - out" in these precision engines. The result can be rough idling, hesita- tion, stalling or loss of performance during initial start --up and cold temperature operation. There are additives available that can be used to help keep intake valves clean too. When used regu- larly, a product can help clean dirty intake valves and fight the forma- tion of deposits. It is safe to use in cars with catalytic converters and won't harm oxygen sensors. Another concern when it comes to fuel systems, and one which doesn't involve the formation of deposits, is the disappearance of leaded gasoline. Without leaded gasoline, the ex- haust valve seats of over 15 million vehicles designed to run on leaded gas could experience excessive wear, which eventually result sin lost engine performance. But by using lead substitute, you can coat your engine's valve seats and protect them from excessive wear the way that leaded gasoline would. In fact, tests show that in engines designed for loaded gas, lead substitute can provide exhaust valve seat protection that is equal to that provided by the lead contained in previously available regular lead- ed gasolines. Fuel additives can provide your fuel delivery system and engine with many benefits. If you used the right additive for your particular system or performance problem, you can keep you car running smoothly and efficiently through- out the year. The misunderstood lubricant Automotive grease is one of the least known and most misunderstood of all lubricants. Most consu- mers are unaware of the importance of using grease to reduce wear caused by friction on vehicle parts, such as disc brake wheel bearings, universal joints and the chassis. The following questions are asked most often of service station managers. The answers were prepared by lubricant experts. Q: What is the general composition of automotive grease? A. Automotive grease consists of a fluid lubricant, such as petroleum oil, dispersed in a thickener, such as lithium soap. It also contains additives to improve lubricity. The thickener serves to keep the lubricant and additives in contact with the surface subject to friction. Q: How does grease perform? A: The fluid lubricant is gradually released from the thickener. The grease provides a tough, long- lasting film, excellent extreme pressure properties and good resistance to water washout for vehicle parts. Q: How are automotive greases classified? A: By relative hardness. The National Lubricat- ing Grease Institute assigns consistency numbers ranging from 000 (semi -fluid) to 6 (hard). The consistency of a grease is an important factor in its ability to lubricate, seal and remain in place, and to the methods mid ease by which it can be dis- pensed and applied. Most automotive greases are in the NLGI no. 2 range, ranging from soft to me- dium consistency. Q: What is an EP lubricant? A: EP is the commonly used abbreviation for ex- treme pressure in lubricant terminology. Extreme pressure lubricants, including greases, contain ad- ditives to improve their ability to adhere to the sur- face of metals under high bearing pressure. Q: clow often should 1 grease my car? A: The answers varies, depending on automobile models and manufacturers. For example, Chrysler suggests every 12 months or 7,500 miles and Ford opts for every 15,000 miles. The proper answer is found in the owner's manual for the car.
