Times-Advocate,,October 30. 1991 Carnival plans revealed GRAND BEND - While the sum- mer tourist season in Grand Bend has just ended, preparations are al- ready being made for the winter version. Monday night, Dave Sheppard, chairman of the Winter Carnival said the sixth annual event will have a few additions to its two weekends of fun in the snow. "The lineup is pretty well the same, but there are some addi- tions," said Sheppard. In the planning stages are a sen- iors day with entertainment, games and a dinner dance. This year's theme is "The Envi- ronment, R's to Discover," with the focus on recycling. Also planned is a snow sculpting competition for school children from Grand Bend and Stephen and Bosanquet Townships. Sheppard said the children will be involved in a workshop, learning the tine art of snow sculpturing and then be given the chance to build their own masterpiece. The highlight of the Winter Car- nival which is run over two week- ends February 8-9 and 15-16 is the Ontario International Snow Sculpt- ing Competition. Last year the seven, three-person teams were the guests at a dinner hosted by the village. "The teams raved about the treat- ment they received here," said Sheppard. He gave credit to several individ- uals who assisted a great deal with last year's event. A couple of local construction companies were busy building the forms for the sculptures. "These people do this free and all they ask for is a thank you and a bit of recognition," said Sheppard. He also thanked village works su- perintendent Bud Markham for keeping the streets plowed. "He does a good job, it looks like a village and not a ghost town." Other events at this year's festival include the children's party, hay rides, dog sled races and a talent competition: Later Monday night, Sheppard was nominated by Grand Bend Council as a candidate for a citizen- ship award.
