Many former members and presidents of the Auxiliary attended the event. Dorothy Pfaff, one of the founding members and Auxiliary president in 1954, reflected on the four dec- ades in which the women's group has lent its support to the R.E. Pooley Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. On October 19, 1951, 47 members were initiated in Exeter's first Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Sixteen of those women are still members today, observed Pfaff. The Auxiliary's first task was to set up a catering business to handle dinners of up to 250 to raise money for the branch. "What we didn't have to work with, we brought from home," said Pfaff, who also pointed out that until the catering was properly established, regular dances were used to raise money, along with the many bake sales, bingos, and draws held over the years. Pfaff also said she remembered that the bake sales sometimes did not attract enough home baking, and loaves of bread had to be bought at the bakery to sup- plement the display. "Everyone was just clamoring for our home-made bread. Little did they know we bought it at the bake shop," she said, inspiring laughter from the many members in the hall who remembered those sales. The Auxiliary made many purchases over the years. In 1955 the big expenditure was for kilts for the pipe band. The group also helped fund the many upgrades and renovations the Legion hall has seen over the years. Outside the walls of the Legion, the Auxiliary has also helped fund the town swimming pool, high school graduation scholarships, and purchase equipment for the South Huron Hospital, among its projects. Pfaff said she recognized that many Auxiliary mem- bers are now becoming senior citizens themselves and that the spirit of the organization must be passed on to the younger generation. Staff a by Roberta Templeman By Roberta Templeman STAFFA - Esther Smale hosted the Tweedsmuir meeting of the Staffa Womens Institute at her home on Wednesday evening. Guest speaker for the evening was Clayton Harris, who spoke on genealogy, telling members how to about researching their family trees. Harris said a good source of. information was the family Bible. He also stated any family stories should be included as this is one way of sharing info with the next generations. He closed by reading one of his family trees in story form, which was most interesting. Clayton was introduced by Grace Kerslake, and thanked by Esther Smale. President Joyce Vivian presided for the meeting, opening with a thought for the day, the Institute Ode, accompanied by Marion McCaughey on the piano and the Mary Stewart Collect Thirteen members answered the roll call by naming something I have that would amaze my grandmother. Grace Kerslake reported on the recent Perth County Rally, held at Atwood Community Centre,, and Verle Mahon reported on the Lon- don Area Convention held recently in Nor+ ich. Durinb business, erle Mahon re- ported that she had approached Hibbert Council about putting a W.I. crest or sign on the hall. This was left to discuss further at the November meeting. Roberta Tem- pleman will host the November meeting when Betty Boyce will be speaking on safety. Joyce Miller gave a short reading on grandmothers and the meeting was adjourned. Following tea, members enjoyed having their tea cups read by Ra- chel Schalm, Hensall, who along with Annie Reed were guests at the meeting. Personals Linda Seguin and Dan of Strat- ford visited on Saturday with Rob and Bev Templeman and family. Addy Van Nyonatten of Mitchell was a weekend visitor with Carrah Templeman.
