Childreach no blg draw in Crediton
CREDITON - A program for par-
enthood in Crediton has not gone
over as well as expected. In fact, it
has not gone anywhere at all.
Jane Hoy, coordinator of Chil-
dreach, said she could not under-
stand why the program at Zion
United Church had failed to attract
even one parent to the first two
Wednesday morning workshops in
the church basement.
Hoy said the program is similar
to a "professional development"
program, except that the profession
is parenting. Children, said Hoy,
do not come with a set of instruc-
tions and workshops with other par-
ents and guest speakers can be
helpful for meeting the challenges
of parenthood.
Last Wednesday, Pauline Lingard
was scheduled to discuss "street
proofing" with interested parents.
The idea is to balance caution with
a sense of community.

careful' without turning them into
paranoid little creatures?" says
Hoy.
However, nobody tamed up for
that meeting either.
"We're going to go one more
week," said Hoy, who said that if
the October 30 session on drugs
and alcohol does not attract any in-
terest, then Childreach will move
on to other Huron County commu-
nities in which it is more success-
ful.
Similar programs in Wroxeter,
Dungannon, Fordwich, Goderich,
Hensall and other places have gone
over well. Why Crediton has not
generated the same interest is a
mystery to Hoy.
"We try to spread around and
look for communities that have
young families and need some sup-
port," said Hoy, who thought Credi-
ton would have fitted that descrip-
tion.
Childreach, is sponsored by the
Children's Aid Society, and is tar-
geted at parents of pre-school and
younger school age children.
Hay applies for
Rest Home sidewalk
ZURICH - Blue Water Rest
Home residents are one step closer
to getting a sidewalk connecting
their home to the neighbouring
community of Zurich.
Hay Township council, upon
hearing that it would cost about
$16,000 to construct a sidewalk
along Highway 84 from the home
to to the village, has agreed to ap-
ply for a Ministry of Transportation
50 percent grant to build the side-
walk.
Ross Fisher, works superinten-
dent, said that the issue of a side-
walk had been brought up by Blue
Water Rest Home residents several
times over the past years. They in-
sist that if the sidewalk is built, res-
idents will be more willing to take
walks into the village.
"They've been pushing for it for a
number of years," said Fisher, but
said that the whole project depends
on whether or not the ministry will
come up with the funds to help pay
the cost of construction.
"They put out so much money
each year for sidewalks, and if
you're lucky you get it and if you
don't, you don't," said Fisher.

ebrating National Block Parent

plaint on Nelson St., where damage
was done to a motor vehicle.
On Friday, a motor vehicle acci-
dent was investigated at Main St.

Marnie Coulson, on behalf of the
Co-operative Housing Federation
of Canada, presented a rainbow
flag to the co-op's first president,
Mickie Struyke. The rainbow flag
is a symbol of co-op's all over the
world. Coulson also presented a
framed set of co-op principles and
hierarchy to Struyke on behalf of
Community Homes of Southwest -
cm Ontario, the consulting agency
which oversaw the administration
of the project.
Mayor Bruce Shaw congratulated
all on a "job well done" and noted
that Exandarea Meadows project
Isurvived a long time.
"To prove that, we count the
number of ministers of housing
there have been," joked Shaw.
Shaw pointed out that the speed
at which applications were received
for residency in the co-op proved
the extent to which the housing was
needed in the town.
MPP Paul Klopp, spoke on be-
half of housing minister Evelyn
Gigantcs, and said he has long un-
derstood the advantages of the co-
op ideal. He offered his congratu-
lations to the founding board.
"You need the people in the local
community to keep that effort
alive," said Klopp.
MP Murray Cardiff said "the
need for affordable housing in the
County is continuing to grow" and
he commended those responsible
for taking the initiative to make Ex-

graph from the visit of the Prince
and Princess of Wales to commem-

cial opening coincided with the
Royal Visit.
Four units of the co-op were
Iopened to the visitors at the open-
ing for tours after the reception.
Police were called to Main St.
Saturday evening to answer com-
plaints of excessive noise. The
Town of Exeter anti -noise by-law
allows for a fine up to $2,000 for
such things as noisey stereos, radi-
os or pets. Police urge citizens to
respect the normal peace and quiet
that should prevail.
On Sunday, police answered an-
other call to break and enter this
time to a house on Main St. A ster-
eo was reported stolen and police
are continuing their investigation.
