UCW afternoon unit meets
EXETER - The afternoon unit
met at the Villa for their October
meeting. Laura Dickey, president,
was unable to be present and Alma
Langford presided, welcoming eve-
ryone and reading a Thanksgiving
poem.
A moment's silence was observed
for Myrtle Brock.
Langford reminded everyone of
the visit to the Bluewater Rest
Clandeboye

CLANDEBOYE - Education was
the topic of the October meeting of
the Clandeboye Women's Institute
held at the home of the convener,
Hazel Williams in Lucan.
Sixteen members and four visi-
tors answered the roll call, "Name
the subject you enjoyed most in
school". Guest speaker was Darlene
Donner who teaches 'Special Edu-
cation" for the Middlesex County
School Board, her subject, "The
Extended Learning Program for the
Gifted". She told how these stu-
dents are screened, beginning in
Grade 3 and up to grade 8. Many
questions were asked by the mem-
ber as it proved to be a very inter-
esting topic.
A reading entitled "Sick" was
read, giving all the excuses that
children create in order to stay
home from school. Ruth Hill gave a
reading "What are our children
worth."
During the business, thank you
notes were read from "Fanshawe
Pioneer Village" and Community
House," the latter asking for dona-
tions of paper towels, toilet paper,
pillows and blankets, diapers large
and extra large, women's and chil-
dren's winter coats, mitts, gloves
etc.
Lunch conveners, Betty Coughlin
and Edie Worthington assisted the
hostess with a delicious lunch and a
social times was enjoyed by all.
Rea Neil and family, who farmed
for many years in the Clandeboye
area, returning to Lucan in 1986,
have taken up residence at Crai-
gholme Nursing Home, Ailsa
Craig.
We wish them well in their new
home.
No election
in Hensall
Home on October 28 and the ba-
zaar on November 9. Members are
to bring their fees to the November
14 meeting.
Devotions were given by Muriel
Marshall, chairlady for the pro-
gram. She read a poem "Fill your
heart with Thanksgiving". Bev
Robinson spoke to the group and
read from Luke 17, 11 to 19. Eve-
ryone enjoyed an old hymn Brin-
ing in the Sheaves. Bev spoke
about how many things in life We
must be thankful for. Mildred
- Thomson thanked Bev and present-
ed a gift to her.
Avis Cudmore entertained on the
piano with several numbers ending
with "Beautiful Beautiful Brown
Eyes". The meeting closed with
prayer.
Fall anniversary service

THAMES ROAD - Rev. Don
Robinson of the Brucefield-Kippen
charge was in charge of the Pall
Anniversary Service on Sunday.
Rev. Sheila Macgregor exchanged
pulpits with Rev. Don.
Gary Mallelieu of St. Marys sang
two very pleasing solos accompa-
nied by the pianist Agnes Bray.
The congregation sang the chil-
dren's hymn "Jesus Loves Me" and
Rev. Don gave the children's mes-
sage "Living Stones" which was
very interesting. Rev. Don read the
Scripture Lessons 1 Kings 8:22-24,
2740 and Galations 1:1-10. His
very aspiring message was entitled
"Advertising For God".
The church was very tastefully
decorated for Thanksgiving and the
Anniversary with mums, begonias
and many vegetables.
Coming events - The Messen-
gers' Hallowe'en Party will be on
Friday, October 25 at 7 p.m. at
Thames Road United Church. Par-
ents please bring sandwiches or
cookies.
Sunday, October 27 at 10 a.m.
the Elimville Anniversary with
Rev. Ed Laksmanis preaching, with
potluck lunch to follow.
Bible Study on Fridays from 2 to
3 p.m. at Exeter Villa. All wel-
come.

Surprise anniversary
On Thanksgiving Sunday the
family of Fleming and Doris Simp-
son surprised them by taking them
for brunch to celebrate their 35th
wedding anniversary. Those in at-
tendance with Fleming and Doris
were Ken and Ruby Simpson, Lon-
don, Edna Anderson, Margaret Td-
ebner, Ralph. Cathy. Jason and Jer-
emy of Exeter; Don and Helen
Reid; Bob, Debbie, Alicia and Erik
Lawrence of Hensall; Dan Reid of
Seafar h. Ron, Karen, Carrie and
Ronnie Simpson. After brunch and
dessert they were presented with an
anniversary plate .and bell, and a
Treasured Memory anniversary
couple figurine.
H -P Quilt Guild
KIRKTON - The Huron -Perth
Quilt Guild held their first Fall Fes-
tival of Quilts at the Kirkton-
Woodham Community Centre. The
premiere show -was very well at-
tended with guests from the sur-
rounding area as well as Toronto,
Mount Forest and Strathroy just to
name a few.
The fust prize raffle winner of
the Guild's Quilt was Robed Rat-
cliffe
at
cliffe of RR1 Si. Marys. The sec-
ond place quilted pillow went to
June Bailey of St. Marys and the
third place tote bag will be used by
Elizabeth Conlin of Lucan.
The Viewer's Choice ribbon was
awarded to Joyce McKay of Strat-
ford for her Zigzag Diamond Quilt.

HENSALL - 'fliers, will.. be _no --
municipal election in the village of
Hensall, as the village has rcxeived
the requisite number of nomina-
tions to fill the various municipal
positions.
Former councillor Peter Groot
announced last Tuesday that he
will not seek re-election on coun-
cil, and will instead seek a position
as trustee for the Separate School
Board.
Acclaimed as councillors are in-
cumbents Butch Hoffman and Jeff
Reabum as well as newcomers Bob
Seaton and Richard F. Packham.
Nominations for two positions as
PUC commissioner were reopened
Wednesday with two persons being
nominated and certified. Harold
Knight and Gary Maxwell, both in-
cumbents, have been acclaimed as
commissioners.
Cecil Pepper was acclaimed as
the new village reeve.
