On October 12 several people witnessed physical abut and vio- lence in Goderich. It wasn't on the street late at night or in a back al- ley or behind closed doors. It was at the Goderich Community Arena in front of many parents, teenag- ers, referees, coaches, and young children. I became upset at the sight of the fist fight where a Goderich player, wearing a Burger Bar hockey shirt removed ke a hoc mask Ex- eter hockey player and proceeded to punch the Exeter player several times in the head. I have been at- tending my son's hockey games for nine• seasons and this is the have experience I ha e had with such violence. I have been told by other parents that this is the beha- viour that I can expect to witness on the ice in the future because it is the Bantam League and such vi- olence is typical. The Minor Hockey Association of Ontario permits body contact at this level and since tempers flare after the body contact fighting occurs on the ice. I could not justify this reasoning in my own mind so I left the inside ice area of the arena and went into the lobby area where many Gode- rich parents were standing. I angri- 1y said, "Someone should teach the Goderich players how to play hockey without fighting." At this comment two men laughed at me. I responded, "I believe you are laughing cant,L e that g g at this." One of the men said, "He is a big boy. He can take care of him- self." "Yes, he is a big boy but I did not put him in hockey to fight" I replied. What are young boys learning from hockey if they are allowed the right to be violent and to phys- ically assault another person on the ice? Are they going to be the boys who physically assault their girl- friends and later their wives and McCann nets two against Belmont EXETER - Captain Sean McCann had two goals and an as- sist as the Exeter Legionnaires beat host Belmont 6-1 in Shamrock Hockey League bantam action on Friday night. The win improves the locals record to 3-1. On Wednesday they handled visiting Ilderton 4-1. McCann wasn't the only player to get three points against Belmont as Rob Kobayashi had a goal and a couple of assists. Trevor Taylor, ( McDonald and Gavin Snell also, acared. Ted Hoffman also had a good game as he picked up two assists. Damen Kints only allowed one goal on Wednesday in the Legion- naires 4-1 win over Ilderton. Exeter got on the board first when McDonald fed Hoffman with a nice pass and a fairly weak but accurate shot made it 1-0. The hostsupped the score to 2-0 when Adam Jean jammed one in past a crowd. Ilderton got back in the game, pulling to within a goal when Craig McIntyre flipped a high shot over Kints with 23 seconds left in the first period. In the second, Exeter got two! more as Gavin Snell tettoo ti-XF from Taylor and Matt Godbolt pfd Ian Jean scored with the assist go- ing to McDonald. The Exeter bantams travelled to Ilderton on Monday and Wednes- day are in Thamesford. children? Violence is taught and learned by example. Cooperativeness, respect- fulness, sportsmanship, and toler- ance are also taught and learned by example. Hockey associations need to consider what values they could be teaching our young people. After the first fight it wasn't long before a sec- l and fight erupted l before the end of the second period. Our coach suggested stopping the game as Exeter had only 6 players out of 8 and Goderich had 15 players out of 17 left to play the third period. Even though tensions were mount- ing the referees would not allow the game to stop. In fact our coach was told if he took his team home at this point the coach wouldn't be al- lowed to coach a game the rest of the Season. Do the coaches and the referees not have a responsibility to society and the young people to stop vio- lence and physical abuse? In any other societal context this behaviour would be against the law. In high school the students who were fighting would be sus- pended. On the street people fight- ing could be charged by the police. if it were parents hitting their child they could be charged with child abuse. If it were a teacher hitting a child the teacher could be fired. If it were a man hitting his wife he would be charged with wife assault. Whyon the violence tolerated is ice? Why do men laugh at women who are upset after witnessing vio- lence. Why do some hockey teams fight more than other teams? Who has the responsibility to end body contact in hockey? Answers to these questions need to be found if we really do want to eliminate vio- lence in our society against men, women and children. Parents pay a lot of money to have their sons play hockey.
