Kippen East Women's Institute
By Margaret R. Hoggart6
KIPPEN - President Grace Drum-
mond opened the October meeting
with a time of remembrance, as one
of our life members, Charlotte
McDowell, had recently passed
away.
Rena Caldwell read the motto
that Charlotte McDowell had writ-
ten for our September meeting "Be-
lieve, if it is to be it is up to me". It
seemed to be very fitting, just the
way McDowell had lived her life:
always pleasant and kind, ready to
help anybody whenever she could.
Charlotte will be missed as a mem-
ber of our Institute.
Roll call was to bring a snapshot
of your farm and Hilda Payne our
curator will insert them in Kippen
East's curator's book.
Ruby Triebner and Hilda Payne
each had to pay 250 fine for failing
to wear their pin.
Fem Dougall was introduced as
our guest speaker. She brought us
up to date on the findings on the
history of Usbome Township. Dou-
gall, along wit a committee, have
been compiling a book to be print-
ed to celebrate 150 years of Us -
borne Township. For three years
meetings have been held to gather
information and sort _through, old
books and files. Dougall reminded
us that 1921 was the first year in
which women could vote in a feder-
al election.
Payne thanked Dougall and pre-
sented her with a gift of apprecia-
tion.
Ruby Triebner who had the smile
for the month read to us "This Old
World".
There was a beautiful covered tu-
reen of Blue Willow pattern china
on the table; Sadie Hoy had written
a poem explaining the story behind
it all. Apparently when the china
was fust made only one person was

maiden, then at a later date she was
joined by her lover. Another time
the china appeared on the market,
three people were on the bridge, the
maiden, her young man and her fa-
ther. So check your old Blue Wil-
low pattern china. You may have
an antique in your possession.
Thea Wisch gave courtesy re-
marks.
Helen MacLean conducted a very
interesting contest with 37 articles
placed inside a small pumpkin.
Phyliss Parsons and Fern Dougall
each guessed 14 of them. There
was only one prize to be had, so
Phyliss guessed the lucky number
to win the prize.
This brought to a close a very in-
teresting meeting.
Thought for the day: Remember
to speak kind words and you will
be sure to hear kind echoes.
