Harvest of hope
Thanksgiving, in the country,
has the reputation of being that
day in which we take stock of our
season's harvests and say Thanks'.
That's not always an easy thing
to do. While some of our fanners
have had good crops and reason-
able sales, there are many more
whose economic situation is not
just bleak but intolerable.
We add to the long-range plan
of our federal government and
banks, who seek to deliberately
decrease the number of fanners in
Canada. Their thinking is that
fewer farms will mean bigger in-
comes for those running the re-
maining 'efficient' large opera-
tions.
Obviously, the long-term effect
of this kind of policy can only re-
sult in high food costs for every-
one, a permanent loss of farm land
and flexibility, not to mention a
new dependence on foreign coun-
tries for Canada's food and trans-
portation.

Sometimes we wonder just what
it is we are saying 'thank you' for!
Its said that every fairy tale has
at its heart some universal yearn-
ing. If this is true, then central to
the story of Aladdin and his wish -
fulfilling genie is the longing to
have unlimited possessions.
Our country is filled with sec-
ond -generation television addicts.
We have been adequately brain-
washed to believe that attaining
wealth and possessions is the
highest purpose in life.
We are what we have! Conse-
quent to this thinking is that noth-
ing scares people more than the
thought of bankruptcy. We're not
sure that's an experience people
can be expected to survive.
How easy it is to forget the anal-
ogy that compares wealth to sea-
water. The more you drink, the
more you want, and in the end, the
desire for its kills the soul.
Behind the Thanksgiving din-
ner, turkey, cranberries, pumpkin
pie and all, is the Giver of gifts.
How strange it would be to come
to Thanksgiving with no one to
thank.
Regardless of our financial stat-
us, the brokenness of homes, dev-
astating medical reports, or the
emptiness of grief, we rejoice in
the knowledge that nothing can
separate us from the love of God.
Our Thanksgiving celebrations,
whatever they mar be, are a re-
minder that the nchness of life
consists in appreciating what we
have been given, rather than in
what we gather.
If we are to gather in the harvest
of hope, let's Iook closely at what
it is God offers to each of us this
Thanksgiving Day.
Laughter
In May of 1984, Rev. Ben Weir,
a Presbyterian minister, was kid-
napped in the streets of Beirut.
For 16 months he was imprisoned
by extremists of the Shiite Muslim
community.
He tells of being deprived of
any human contact for 14 months.
And then, suddenly, found himself
in a room with Father Martin Jen -
co. They started to talk in whis-
pers. They shared their concerns
and fears.
Great emotions seemed to over-
flow. And then the two men found
themselves literally rolling in the
aisles with laughter. For so long
these men had cried, now they
joined in side -slapping laughter -
one of God's most incredible gifts.
It is said that laugher is God's
hand on the shoulder of a troubled
world. Sometimes life's circum-
stances are so overwhelming our
only response seems to be laugh-
ter.
Prayer
This week, hundreds of people
in Montreal gathered at. Mary's
Queen of the World Cathedral to
pray for an end to the fighting in
Croatia.
We may wonder of what use
this gesture is. Are we really 'do-
ing something' when what we do
is pray?
