Rec centre look/ng
to replace lighting
EXETER - Pay now or pay more
later.
That's the dilemma the South Hu-
ron Recreation board is in and by
indications made Thursday night,
they want to pay now.
The board is looking into replac-
ing all the lights in the community
centre and have been informed by
facility manager Cam Stewardson
that they could save as much as
$4,000 if they go ahead with the
work now.
Kathy D'Alimonte of the Ontario
Hydro, told the board on Thursday,
they could replace all their lights
with energy saving lighting for a to-
tal cost of $47,000. Of that, Ontario
Hydro would give a rebate of
$23,500.
She said the board could do the
work in two stages: the arena lights
and then the rest of the facility. If
they do it all at once, the :board
could save up 10 S4,000.
Stewardson estimated the board
could save about $10,000 annually
in hydro bills once the new lights
are installed.
"Anything that saves that kind of
money, I'm all for it," said Exeter
mayor Bruce Shaw.
The board has $10,000 budgeted
they can put towards the project im-
mediately and it was suggested the
remaining amount could be paid
back in about two -and -a -half years.
Ontario Hydro is approaching
businesses across the province in
an attempt to get them to save ener-
flY"We are really flexible. We're
ready to give money away. We're
trying to defer the need to build
mare generators, there is logic be-
hind this," said D'Alimonte.
She said it costs Ontario Hydro
about $4,000 per kilowatt to design
a new generator.
The recreation centre had a new
energy management computer in-
stalled last year and on Thursday,
Stewardson produced a chart which
showed an $8,500 in savings from
union gas.
Some suggestions made by
D'Alimonte included replacing the
40 wan bulbs in the exit signs with
compact fluorescent lighting which.
lasts a lot longer.
"You not only get the energy sav-
ings, you won't be re -tamping for
two years," she said.
Also, it *as proposed to replace
the T-12 fluorescent lights with
more expensive, but energy saving,
T-8 lights.
The recreation centre would have
18 months to have all the new light-
ing installed if they want to get the
full rebate from Ontario Hydro.
"We want the energy savings. We
want to help you but we want you
to be satisfied," said D'Alimonte.
Old barn ordered
demolished in Zurich
ZURICH - An old derelict barn
in the northwest corner of Zurich
was ordered demolished by the Hu-
ron County Health Unit last week.
Haterleigh Developments, of
Concord, Ontario, are owners of
the barn and the planned subdivi-
sion its sits on. However, the com-
pany failed to indicate whether it
would be demolishing the barn so
the village decided to go ahead
with the demolition and bill Hater-
leigh for the costs.
The barn had been the subject of
complaint for several village resi-
dents over the past months. Many
felt the barn was an unsafe hazard
that was a strong temptation for
children to play inside. The barn
roof fell in a few weeks ago.
"If he doesn't pay it it goes on
taxes," said reeve Bob Fisher of the
costs of Saturday's demolition. "So
it won't be a loss to us."
Haterleigh Developments were
also slow in paying their share of
legal fees charged to the planning
of their subdivision in the north-
west corner of town, but that ac-
count has since been resolved.
Trustees announce
re-election to Board of Ed
CLINTON - Re-election plans
were announced last Monday by
the majority of trustees from the
Huron County Board of Education
at the board's October meeting.
Among those seeking re-election
are Allan Carter, representing the
Township of Tuckersmith and the
Village of Hensall, Yvonne
Slaught, representing the Township
of Stephen, Vice -chair Bea Daw-
son, representing the Townships of

Landfill costs
concern
council
ZURICH - Village council were
musing the future effects of Huron
County's Waste Management Mas-
ter Plan, and were suggesting it
may have unfortunate financial ef-
fects on the county's southern mu-
nicipalities.
With four possible future county
landfill sites in Grey Township, one
in Howick Township and one in
Goderich Township, the chances of
having a north county site are good.
Councillor Doug Thiel asked reeve
Bob Fisher if each municipality
would be responsible for transport-
ing its garbage to the landfill, and
Fisher said that is a likely scenario.
"So if you tucked out and the site
was next door, you'd have the least
transportation costs," observed
Thiel.
