Health care professionals gave a presentation on the risks of cancer and how to avoid the dis- ease for the more than 75 people who attended the session. At the head table, from left are health aids store owner Sidney Tubitt, VON nurse Janice Hayter Oke, emcee Mary Lou Aubin, family physician Dr. Bill Stecluk, and surgeon Dr. Ed Meads. Cancer meeting rated a success HENSALL - A meeting at the Hensall United Church attracted about 90 people to hear several health care professionals explain the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, and how changes in diet and lifestyle can prevent it. "It was something that hadn't been done in the area," explained Kay Elder, one of the three orga- nizers of the September 25 meet- ing. She, Mary Lou Aubin, and Marg Knight sponsored and pro- moted the Cancer Awareness Meeting and brought together the panel of experts. "It was quite an undertaking for us because we didn't know if we could get the people out," said Elder. The experts included Dr. Bill Steciuk from Exeter, prominent surgeon Dr. Ed Meads from Lon- don, VON nurse Janice Hayter Oke from Exeter, and Sidney Tubbitt, the owner of a London store which specializes in health aids and prosthetics for recover- ing patients. The aim was to bring in experts who would follow the process of the disease from diagnosis to sur- gery, and from hospital care to post-treatment rehabilitation. "Nothing had been done like that and we thought we'd give it a try," explained Elder. Although 85 chairs were set up in the United Church hall for the meeting, it was soon apparent that the turnout required a few more. Many had travelled from as far as the northern areas of the county and from London to hear the speakers. Tne discussion on lifestyle changes to prevent cancer was also well received by the audi- ence and a question and answer period afterward directed many questions at the speakers. "A lot of people had questions, some very pointed," noted Elder, who said she was pleased with the way the speakers were able to give frank responses about what their professions were doing in the fight against this very preva- lent disease. Elder also said she was pleased with how the coffee hour held after the meeting also allowed the speakers to mingle with the audience and answer even more questions of a more personal na- ture. Keenagers Korner Craigweil Day Centre news AILSA CRAIG - September started with a trip down memory lane to remember some funny inci- dents that happened during the "Day Centre Seniors' school "daze." The birthday of the month was celebrated with a decorated cake as usual, but this time done by Jeltje Briemer since Ruth was off work with a bad back. Breimer was with us that -day doing double duty, for she treated the seniors to a slide show of Holland, - not through the eyes of a tourist, but a proud citizen of that country. A visit to Western Fair is always a fall highlight. Several Kzenagers got in on this year's day at the fair. Linda Wan from "Beads and Plenty More" in London came to teach everyone a fascinating new craft; making jewelry with Sculpey. Anne Devine also introduced them to making fabric wreaths. At least that is why she came, but she ended up giving the group a whole lot of ideas for bazaar items, each of which they are anxious to make. Diane Peels from Ildcrton, brought Chocolate and Mud, her two short -haired German Pointers to show what training can do for a dog. Not only was it impressive, but the seniors enjoyed being lov- ingly greeted when she told them to "Go be friendly!" and to have them wave good bye when they left! On the sixteenth of September, the Mystery Trip took the group on an interesting route to Martha- ville to see the site of the Interna- tional Ploughing Match that would open the following day. After a good lunch at the Ranch House at Reece's Corners, they came home via Strathroy for dessert at the Cool Cucumber, for it turned out to be the hottest day in Septem- ber!. The seniors picked some years at random and spent a few days discussing 1940 and 1959. After hearing some of the highlights in world happenings, fashion trends and entertainment who's who, they recalled what stages of life each of them were at in those years. With the cooler weather, regular monthly "Soup and Sandwich" days are back again. The first one coincided with the "Baking Avail- able Day," so some of the seniors went home with their supper ready to eat. They usually prepare more soup than needed, so the excess can be bought at a nominal fee. Laurie Engel provides a wonderful service for the seniors who per- haps no longer wish to do a lot of baking for themselves, but get hungry for the good home -baked goodies in amounts they can man- age. The next day for that is Octo- ber 25, so if you'd like to get in on it, come spend a day with them be- fore then and get your order in! The Day Centre has some inter- esting days lined up for the next few months. If you'd like to join us or receive a calendar of sched- uled events, give the home a call. It's in the book under Craigwiel Day Centre for Seniors. Queensway seniors enjoy tours HENSALL - Queensway resi- dents had a wonderful time this past week enjoying tours of the countryside with volunteer drivers, Marlene Peck, Doug Insley, and Walter Knowles. Fall leaves have been beautiful this year with reds, golds and oranges all contributing to the blaze of colour. Afternoon stops at the Bayfield park for juice and snack completed each tour. Monday evening Hensall Presby- terian women played their last Bin- go of September with us. Residents were happy for the mix of after- noon bingos on the first and second Mondays of the month, and eve- ning bingos for the third and fourth Monday. As with many of us, some residents are night hawks and like evening activities, while others pre- fer their recreation in the afternoon hours. Pastor Alles of Zurich Lutheran Church led the worship service Tuesday. Gertie Fleischauer was painist. Baking Club met Friday after- noon and turned out a date, nut loaf. Weekly baking sessions this month will feature, pumpkin bread, zucchini loaf and carrot cake, a perfect way to taste the many fall vegetables. Queensway Volunteer Auxiliary members are busy planing the anu- al craft and bake sale, to take place Wednesday, November 13 at 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Please keep this date in mind and plan to join us. Our quilt draw will take place October 25. There's still time to purchase tickets from Quecnsway's office, Bill Gibson's hair Salon or from some members of the Hensall KineUes on this beautiful queen size Dresdan Plate Quilt.
