Panthers get top ranking
TORONTO - Ten days after their last league competition, the South
Huron Panthers girls field hockey team travelled to the June Collard
Schoolgirls' Conference in Toronto to play in die top-ranked pool of the
prestigious tournament.
This was a four -pool event with the winner of each, which included the
Panthers, being ranked in the top four for the provincial finals later this
fall.
In the first game, played under less than ideal weather conditions, the
Panthers blanked Newmarket 1-0. Lynn Workman was the scorer and
goalie Tonya Riehl recorded the shutout.
This game gave an opportunity for some of the younger players to get
involved with the action with good efforts from Brenyn Baynham and
Kristin Strang.
The second game saw Agincourt provide the opposition in what could
have been a warmup for the OFSAA championship if both are fortunate
to advance that far.
In this one, South Huron carried the game to Agincourt and reversed
the decision of two weeks ago.
April Lewis blasted on past the advancing goalkeeper and as the Agin-
court sweeper was being pressured to clear off the line, she could only
help it over the line. Once again Riehl got the shutout.
The third and final game was a 1-0 victory for the Panthers as they
edged Lorne Park. This game was scoreless until the dying seconds when
Darlene O'Rourke scored the winner.
