The Exeter Mohawks received a very balanced scoring attack over the weekend as they wrapped up their Senior 'A' hockey exhibition schedule with a pair of wins. Saturday in Parkhill, Bannon scored three goals as the Mohawks downed Strathroy 7-4. The follow- ing night at the South Huron Recre- ation Centre in Exeter, the new and improved Prevost had a goal and an assist in a 7-2 win against the Dor- chester Dolphins. "I'm in better shape. I worked hard over the summer. Last year I just let myself go," said Prevost who worked in construction with teammate Kris Bedard during the off season. He scored a shorthanded goal ear- ly in the second period and later set up a powerplay tally. Prevost started last season with the Mohawks, returned home to Kapuskasing where he played some Intermediate hockey, but was back in Exeter by playoff time. "The calibre of hockey I was playing was not real demanding," said the former Stratford Junior B' player. At Kapuskasing, the big winger did not play contact hockey. When he was back in Exeter, it meant playing a physical game, something which took time to get used to. "When there is hitting you have to be in better shape. You're bump- ing and grinding you have to skate it's a whole lot different then coast- ing" Exeter coach Dave Revington no- ticed Prevost is ready to start the season in good shape. "He's in a lot better condition than he was last year. He's lost. a considerable amount of weight and he's skating better," said Revington. Early lead: Against the Dol- phins, Exeter took a quick 1-0 lead when veteran Wayne Urbshott drilled a quick shot past Kevin Cole. The game's opening goal started on a nifty play when Greg Snyder slapped the puck against the boards in a sort of a backpass to Joe October 12 Exeter at Dunnville, 8:30 p.m. 18 Exeter at Dorchester, 8:30 p.m. 25 Exeter at Dorchester, 8:30 p.m. 26 Ingersoll at Exeter, 8:30 p.m. 29 Exeter at Aylmer, 8:15 p.m. November 2 Dunnville at Exeter, 8:30 p.m. 6 Exeter at Chatham, 8:30 p.m. 9 Petrolia at Exeter, 8:30 p.m. 10 Dorchester at Exeter, 7:30 p.m. 15 Exeter at Dorchester, 8:30 p.m. 16 Exeter at Strathroy, 8:15 p.m. 23 Exeter at Ingersoll, 7:45 p.m. December 1 Walpole at Exeter, 7:30 p.m. 8 Dorchester at Exeter, 7:30 p.m. 15 Strathroy at Exeter, 7:30 p.m. 19 Exeter at Pt. Brydges Bulldogs at 8:15 p.m. The Bulldogs lost their first game of the season 8- 6 to Alvinston. Scherer who saw Urbshott wide open. The Dolphins who seem to be a much better team than they were last year, took a 2-1 lead on goals by Rob Tuffin and captain Tim Duff. But the Mohawks exploded in the second frame, building a 5-2 lead on a shorthanded tally by Prevost and powerplay goals from Richard Hawkins and Barry Baynham plus a nice goal by Scherer, In the third, Craig Hoster and Paul Barnes cush- ioned the lead. Saturday in Parkhill, the Mo- hawks had two shorthanded goals and it looks as though playing with a man disadvantage will not ham- per them as much as other teams. "It's always nice to get that short- handed goal. It boosts morale espe- cially when you are down 2-1,' said Prevost. Revington said his team won't be shying away from any chances to get the odd shorthanded goal. "We're going to try and utilize the no red line. We haven't been work- ing on anything. We've been chang- ing lines and letting the guys play." That's exactly what the Mohawks have done, winning all three pre- season contest. Saturday while Bannon had the hat trick, Grey Snyder and Bill Glover scored shorthanded and Hoster netted a pair of goals. Both Snyder and Glover showed a lot of speed while killing the pen- alty and both had good shots to score goals. Looking to the start of the 1991- 92 season the Mohawks have got a lot of depth again, some of those players have yet to play a game. "We've got some guys that haven't been out yet I wish could have been here a little earlier..other than that I'm pleased," said Reving- ton. Mohawks moments:...Exeter de- fenceman Dale Timmermans may have a bad eye but he still got in a few solid punches when he squared off in a bout...Rookie goalie Jeff Hill looked very sharp in all three pre -season games as he did not al- low a goal in the 90 minutes he played. Piling up In front of the net may not be the best way Urbshott (he's the one on the bottom) and the Exeter day. Junior 'D' Hawks start with split PT. STANLEY - The Exeter Hawks opened their Western Onta- rio Junior 'D' season this weekend, splitting a pair of games. After an impressive win Friday evening at home against the Bel- mont Pests, the Hawks had every- thing go wrong as they dropped Saturday's contest in Pt. Stanley against the Lakers. Exeter was without the services of defensemen Larry Lewis and Nathan Blight for the season's opening weekend, as both were sit- ting out suspensions as a result of altercations during the pre -season. Both are expected to return to the line-up Wednesday night when the Hawks travel to Mitchell. Long night A short bench proved disastrous for the locals Saturday, as they dropped an 8-3 decision in Pt. Stan- ley to the Lakers. The game marked the first in a four road games for the the Hawks. Pi Stanley took it to Exeter right off the opening face-off, scoring just 32 seconds into the game. The Hawks replied almost immediately, as Dan Ryan notched his first of two on the night, with assists going to Scott Schiedcl and Ray Cousi- neau. The Lakers then built a 3-1 lead before Ryan notched his second from Cousineau and Jamie Cornish at the 17 minute mark of the first Exeter Hawks rookie Dan Ryan, right, tries to get a spinning puck In Friday's Junior 'D' open- er. period. Pt. Stanley ran away with the game scoring four times in the sec- ond and adding another in the third. Nick Wieckowski rounded out the scoring for the Hawks, with as- sists to Shayne Robinson and Alan Blommaert. Crowd pleaser Exeter's home opener Friday eve- ning was a crowd pleaser, which had a little bit of everything. Roo- kie Shawn Chipchase struck for four goals in the game, and Hawks' neuninder Clint McCann kicked out 36 shots in an 8-2 victory over the Belmont Pests. "It was a fairly decent game for their fust outing," said coach John Kernick. "But they've still got a lot of work to do." Ray Cousineau got things going at 2:29 of the first period, when he finished off a three-way passing play with Dan Ryan and Scott Schiedel. Just 13 seconds later, Mark Reid and Doug Clark com- bined to set up Shawn Chipchase for his first of four. BAmont made it 2-1 early in the second, but Clark restored the two goal lead minutes later. With Exet- er on the powerplay, Clark scored on the wrap around with assists go- ing to Reid and John Bell. Ryan notched the team's fourth goal from Steve Vandenbetk" all Jamie Cornish, but the Pests cut the lead in half moments later with one of their own. But that was all she wrote for the visitors as McCann shut the door for the remainder of the game. Derek Shackleton scored unassisted 11 seconds into the third period, and Chipchase followed suit with a solo effort of his own. Chipchasc completed the hatrick at 16:12 of the third, after some nice work by Bell and Shackleton and, still hungry for more, scored his fourth of the night with under two minutes remaining. Clark and Dave Dalrymple assisted. The Hawks next home game will be Friday, October 18 when they host Mt. Brydges. to a goad start EX 1ER ..
