Teams eliminated from Appreclaton Night
EXETER - While the Town of
Exeter will soon be holding its an-
nual Appreciation Night for those
who have left their mark in the past
years, there will be a few changes
to this year's program.
While town employees and board
and committee members will still
be recognized at this year's ban-
quet, the main change will be how
the town honours athletes who ex-
cel on a provincial or national lev-
el.
In the past, the town has present-
ed awards to entire teams at the an-
nual banquet, and did in fact get
into hot water when the Ontario
championship -winning Mohawks
were missed from the honour roll at
1989's banquet and were brought to
the 1990 banquet in compensation.
However, council approved a
plan to eliminate teams from the
banquet and to only invite individu-
al athletes from Exeter who excel.
Teams would be presented with
plaques from the town at other oc-

cacions.
.,haw said the problem arose
when honouring "Exeter" teams
which may only have a few players
actually from the town. While he
did not specify the Mohawks, he
said he knew of a team which had
only three town -residents as
players.
Councillor Dave Uriin said be
agreed with Shaw's general propo-
sal, but argued many minor teams
have a few players from Usborne
Township, Huron Park, or other
nearby municipalities who consider
themselves Exeter players and de-
serve recognition.
"I don't think we want to white-
wash them all." said Urlin.
Shaw agreed with Urlin and
pointed out that was why whole
teams should no longer be invited
to the appreciation banquet.
Appreciation Night, which will
be held November 14 this year, will
still include recognition for other
Exeter citizens who have made

achievements at the provincial and
national level, as well as the Citi-
zen of the Year Award.
While there was no nominee for
the town's top award last year,
councilor Harry Klungel ques-
tioned whether the award was need-
ed, or even desirable. Klungel said
he thought the Citizen of the Year
',ward was too specific and singled
out overachievers above others
with lesser abilities who tried as
hard.
Councillor Dorothy Chapman
disagreed with Klungel and said the
town could probably be blamed for
not doing enough to give credit to
its volunteers and other worthy res-
idents.
