SeniorIA hockey
Soehner is back and he's ready to play
By Fred Groves
LUCAN - With a victory of 13-
2, its quite obvious the Exeter Mo-
hawks have got a lot of offensive
power for the upcoming Senior A
hockey season.
But defence is also important
and the Mohawks are proving they
are very strong at both ends of the
pond.
Friday night, they easily beat
Strathroy in their first exhibition
game. Not only was it a chance for
the offence to flex its muscles, but
a familiar blueliner had the oppor-
tunity to show he was still capable
of wearing the white and black.
Mark Soehner has not suited up
for the Mohawks for a year -and -a -
half but he did not look out of
place Friday. The quick skating
Soehner covered a lot of ice and
proved his size can't be taken for
granted.
The smallest defenceman for the
Mohawks, Soehner was ejected in
the second period when he got into
a tussle with Jets' Bob Milligan.
"He's strong and he's a smart
player, he's experienced," said Ex-
eter coach Dave Revington.
With guys the size of veterans
Dale Timmermans and Ron Elliott
and Jeff Warren who is also back
after a year's layoff playing beside
him, Soehner admits he has to
compensate a little for his size.
"You have to play a little smarter
and use the speed a little more."
With the loss of Les Arts who is
playing in Holland this winter,
Soehner will be a big addition to
the team. However, with the depth
the Mohawks have, he knows he
could sit a game or two.
"The depth they've got makes
them go a long way and guys have
got other commitments."
Speaking of commitments, Soeh-
ner had to take some time off from
playing with the Mohawks for per-
sonal reasons.
"The biggest reason is my house
burned down and I was rebuilding

ie Jeff Hill during Friday night's Senior A hockey exhibition game. The Mohawks won big, 13-2.

it. I've got kids (two sons) and I
made them my priority, that's why I
took a year off."
He's very pleased to be back with
the Mohawks and said, "Exeter is a
first class' operation, they treat you
well."
Four goals: Exeter led 3-0 at the
end of the fust period and it was a
convincing 7-2 after 40 minutes.
Strathroy did come close when they
pulled to within a goal when Tim-
mermans fell and Brad Muir
scored. Rob Whitaker had the other
tallyfor the Jets.
The third period saw Mohawks'
rookie Marty Rutledge score four
goals in a row. Rutledge played for
the Junior 'C' Brussels Bulls a year
ago.
With two more exhibition games
left, Saturday in Parkhill against the
Jets (8 p.m.) and in Exeter against
the Dorchester Dolphins at 7:30
p.m., Revington has got time to
make his final selections.
"By the end of next weekend
well have a better idea. We've got
two more games and two more
practices."
Besides Rutledge's outburst, vete-
rans Gord Brooks and Joe Scherer
scored two each with singles from
Dale Gibbon, Bill Glover, Richard
Hawkins, Mark Bannon and Ralph
THE TROUBLE WITH
4 -LETTER WORDS IS
WE DON'T HAVE
ENOUGH OF THEM.
We need some new words to
describe dog -kickers, child -
beaters, abusers of the elderly,
and such. Ideally they should
each start and end with a
hard consonant, because this
seems to improve one's deliv-
ery of profanity.
I have in mind words like
crot, plud, and the like. Your
suggestions are invited.
Let's start a new era in self-
expression.

Hawkins, a returning forward,
also had three assists for a big four
point night.
Between the pipes, returnee Rick
Pikul got the start and allowed both
goals before giving way to rookie
Jeff Hill who played for the Junior
'B' Stratford Cullitons last year.
"We'll have three goaltenders to
start, then we'll see what happens,"
said Revington who also has Paul
Woolford available.
Mohawks notes:...Friday's game
was delayed for several moments in
the first period when Jets' Ray Pa-
vey took a heavy fall into the
boards in front of the Exeter bench.
He was taken by ambulance to the
hospital...Timmermans blocked a
shot and it hit him in the side but he
played the rest of the game.
THANK You
1 wish to express my gratitude to everyone who helped make
the slow pitch tournament at Centralia such a success.
Many thanks to the organizers, volunteers, donators, partici-
pants and all in attendance. I also would like to thank every-
one who contributed to the trust _fund at the Bank of Mon-
treal. Rarely is a man so privileged as to be the recipient of
such an outpouring of goodwill.
Thank you one and all.
