LUCAN - On Wednesday the
Lucan Irish host Burford in their fi-
nal pre -season Junior 'D' of the
1991-92 season and Saturday start
their regular season when they
travel to Belmont.
Advancing to the finals the past
two years, plus having a pair of
championship banners to their
name, Lucan has always been able
to put a powerhouse on the ice.
But this year it could be a little
tougher.
Although management is hope-
ful, as all teams are at the start of a
new season, manager Ken Freeman
noticed on Saturday there is one
weak link.
"We've got a lot of rookies and a
lot of holes to fill on defence," said
Freeman.
With the loss of Todd Hayter and
last year's MVP Jamie Pearce, the
Irish have only three returning
blueliners in Kevin Leitch, Ed Van-
Kerkoerle and Brad Bowers.
In Saturday's 3-3 tie against the
defending league champion Tha-
mesford Trojans, VanKerkoerie
was playing a forward position.
By the weekend the Irish had al-
ready signed eight rookies: Dean
Hammond, Paul Woodburn, Scott
Riddell, Brett Revington, Keith
Robson, Mike VanSteensel, Steve
Snider and Scott Amos.
When asked if the Irish have a
chance to win the division again
and reach the finals, Freeman said,
"it depends on how the young kids
come along. I'm impressed with
them."
The tie against Thamesford saw
Lucan only suit up five returnees
and they still came back after trail-
ing 2-0. Veteran Steve Matthews
scored twice and Hammond also
connected.
Friday night in Thamesford, the
Irish got two goals from Greg De-
ftest with one each by Derek
Greenlee, VanSteenscl and Van-
Kerkoerle.
Host Belmont Friday
Hawks set for home opener
By Ray Lewis
EXETER - The Exeter Hawks
will open their Western Ontario
Junior D' hockey season at home
Friday night against the Belmont
Pests, and if their pre -season is any
indication of things to come, fans
had better climb on the band wagon
early.
The Hawks polished off the Ayr
Centennials in a home and home
series on the weekend, ending their
exhibition schedule undefeated.
But even though Exeter went 6-0-1,
co -coach George Pratt isn't over-
confident.
"We're hoping to do well," said
Pratt. "But I think the north divi-
sion is going to be really tough."
Browsing through the Hawks'
roster, fans can find lots to cheer
about, as Exeter has almost it's en-
tire defensive corps back. The only
loss is former captain Jeff Dalrym-
ple, who will be missed not only
for his defensive prowess but also
for his leadership.
Larry Lewis, Al Blommaert,
Steve Vandenberk and John Bell
have all returned, as has Jamie Cor-
nish, one of the last players re-
leased from the St. Marys Junior B'
Lincolns. Add to that rookie Na-
than Blight, formerly a St. Marys
midget, and the defense is solid.
Exeter's goaltending duo seems
set, with Clint McCann retuming to
active duty between the pipes,
along with rookie John Teahen
from St. Marys who was sharp in
camp.
Up front, the Hawks will miss the
services of Jim Dickens, but several
players have had a strong pre-
season which will help to fill the
gap. Exeter has seven veterans re-
turning to the forward line, includ-
ing centre Derek Shackleton and
left wing Andrew Barton. If rook-
ies such as centre Shawn Chip -
chase, an all-star last season with
the Brussels Bulls in Junior 'C', pan
out, the Hawks will do all right.
"The rookies had a very impres-
sive camp," said Pratt. "And Dave
Dalrymple has adjusted well."
Dalrymple, one of Exeter's top
defensemen last season, is now see-
ing action at left wing. At 6'1" and
180 lbs., Dalrymple has surprised
everyone by becoming one of the
team's leading forwards.
"He'll give us some added
strength on the left side," said Pratt.
"And we know he can play defense
if we need him."
They say defence wins cups. If
the old adage holds true, and the
squad remains healthy, the Hawks
are definite contenders.

Centre is ready for the upcoming

tre ice. Hawks and Mohawks logos

Centennials 7-3 in a physical con-
test.
"We didn't have a good first peri-
od," said Exeter co -coach George
Pratt. "But we got a little better as
the game got older."
Trailing 1-0 in the second period,
Jamie Cornish got the locals on the
board when he snapped home a
pass from Scott Schiedel. After the
Hawks gave up two quick goals to
fall behind 3-1, they stormed back
to score six unanswered.
Shayne Robinson had a pair
while singles were chipped in by
Derek Shackleton, Ray Cousineau,
Dan Ryan and Mark Reid. Schie-
del added three assists.
Exeter 7 - Ayr 5
Friday night the Hawks battled
for a 7-5 win over the visiting Ayr
Centennials in Hensall.
Exeter took a 2-0 lead on goals
by Dave Dalrymple and Paul
Manders, and went up 3-1 when
Nick Wieckowski notched his first
of two on the night. The Hawks
took a 4-1 lead into the dressing
room after the second period, after
a goal by John Bell, but let Ayr
climb back into it in the third.
"It got pretty sloppy out there,"
said Pratt. "And Ayr wasn't about
to give up."
The Centennials stormed back
with four goals in the final frame to
give Exeter a scare, but Shawn
Chipchase netted the winner with
six minutes to go, and Wieckowski
notched his second goal to put the
game out of reach.

Se ria ille wins 1-0
Championship series tied up for Exeter Royals
SEBRINGVILLE - Jody Eidt
connected with a base hit to right
field here Sunday afternoon to
boost his team to a 1-0 win over
the Exeter Royals.
Eidt's single in the bottom of
the ninth inning saw the Sebing-
vilie Junks tie the best -of -five
South Perth Men's Fastbtll
League final series at one game
each.
The series continues in Exeter
on Wednesday at 8 p.m. and again
in Exeter at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Trent Hilpert led off the Sebring-
ville half of the ninth with a single
off of Royals' ace Derwyn Hodgins
and then Kory Dietz went in 10
pinch run. Dietz went to second on
a passed ball and scored on Eidt's
hit.
"That's the first run we've given
up in four games, we're not hitting
the ball," said Exeter coach Fred
Jtm Lewhr
...two Nts
Conk.
He was not overly surprised
about the Juniors coming hack and
evening the series.
"They played well. It just con-
firms what I said before, they're a
good ball team and if you don't
come ready to play, they're going
to beat you."
The Royals could only manage
three hits, a double and a single off
of the bat of Jim Lewis and a base
hit by Kevin Lightfoot- Sebring-
vilk's Jason Baier threw well,
striking out seven.
Exeter watched a lot of balls go
by as they were not swinging the
bat.
"The umpire had a rather large
strike zone. 1t took three or four
innings to realize the fact that the
ball was closer. A lot of the pitch-
es were borderline," said Cook.
Tempers flared in the Sunday's
game when the Juniors were not
very pleased when Royals' catcher
Brian Noyes gunned down Eidt
who tried to steal second in the
fourth inning.
Cook said if the Royals are to
comeback, they are going to have
to be more aggressive both at the
plate and on the base paths.
"We an going to have to make
things happen."
