Junior 'D' roundup
Hawks remain undefeated
By Ray Lewis
EXETER - The Exeter Hawks
Western Junior D' hockey team
had a great weekend, as they swept
all four of their exhibition games.
The Hawks defeated the Paris
Mounties in a home and home se-
ries, and also knocked off both the
Seaforth Centennaires and the
Goderich Junior 'C Sailors.
"We did everything we had
hoped to do on the weekend," said
Exeter co -coach George Pratt Jr.
"All of the rookies got into a game
situation which gave us a little bet-
ter idea of their talent"
The Hawks hope to have their
roster trimmed down by the end of
this week as they enter their final
exhibition games of the pre -season.
Exeter 11- Paris 6
After thrashing Paris Mounties
on Friday evening in Hensall, Exet-
er travelled to Paris Monday eve -t
ning for a return engagement. The=
Hawks scored four goals in the first
period, and never looked back in an
11-6 victory. Exeter scored twice
more in the second before netmind-
er Josh Symons finally gave up a
goal, but the Mounties never recov-
ered.
Dan Ryan notched a hatrick for
the locals while Paul Manders had
a pair of goals and two assists.
Also scoring for Exeter were Mark
Reid, Jim Dickins, Nick Wieckow-
ski, Mark Glavin, Shawn Chip -
chase and Dave Dalrymple.
Exeter 4 - Seaforth 3
In Seaforth Sunday, Exeter took
on the Centennaires in a sluggish
duel.
"It wasn't a good game," said
Pratt. "We should have been all
over them but our passes weren't
clicking."
Doug Clark scored in the game's
opening minute, sliding home a
nice feed from Shawn Chipchase.
Scott Schiedel then scored unassist-
ed but Seaforthmanaged to trim the
lead to one before the end of the pe-
riod.
In the second period, Clark
notched his second of the night
while on the powerplay, and after
the Centennaires tied things up,
Schiedel scored the game winner
early in the third, again while Exet-
er enjoyed a man advantage.
Exeter 6 - Goderich 5
The Hawks travelled to Goderich
Saturday night where they faced off
against the Junior 'C' Sailors. The
tough contest featured the return of
a few more veterans in the likes of
forward Mark Reid, defensemen
John Bell and Larry Lewis along
with netminder Clint McCann.
Senior 'A' update
Mohawks camp is
filled with returnees
LUCAN - With a sprinkling of
newcomers, a fine mixture of re-
turning vetaY is it -xi -some familiar
faces, the Exeter Mohawks are
gearing towards another successful
Senior A hockey season.
Sunday night, coach Dave Rev-
ington and his assistant Al Gates
put the Mohawks through their
paces at the Lucan Community
Centre in anticipation of Friday
night's opening exhibition game.
The Mohawks will take on the
Strathroy Jets in Lucan at 8:30
p.m.
A quick count, confirmed by
Revington, reveals the Mohawks
are expecting 23 of the 31 players
they had a year ago.
"That's a lot better than seven or
eight guys returning; said Gates.
This time last year, the Mohawks
had question marks beside several
players. Instead of questions in au
year's training camp, _there seems
to be answers. -
On defence the loss of veteran
Les Arts who has gone to Holland
to play, will hurt, but the Mohawks
are pleased with who they do have
on the blueline.
"With Chet Couture back full-
time and Jeff Warren and Mark
Soehner, they'll offset the loss,' said
Revington.
Warren played for the Mohawks
two years ago and three seasons
ago Soehner was the captain. Pete
Jeffrey was Western's MVP last
season and he will be a big addition
on defence.
Exeter has a lot of experience in
goal with veteran Rick Pikul and
Paul Woolford who filled in here
and there last season is back.
They'll be joined by Jeff Hill who
comes from the Stratford Junior '8'
Cullitons.
Familiar faces Ron Elliot, Kris
Bedard, Jeff MacLenaghan, Bariy
Baynham, Dale Timmermans and
Jeff Pfaff will be patroling the blue -
line.
"If the guys who are out stay with
us, we should have more depth,"
said Revington.
Up front Revington has got a
long list of veterans which is head-
ed by Dale Gibbon, Bill Glover,
Jeff Shipley and Cord Brooks.
Vying for a spot who have im-
pressed the coaching staff are Rob
Kingshott a leftwinger and Western
grad, youngster Scou Pfaff who,
with the New Hamburg Junior C
team, was the league leading scorer
and Craig Hoster who played in
Scotland last winter.
"I think well be strong at both
ends of the rink," said Revington.
While the Mohawks take on
Strathroy on Friday, they face the
- Jets on Saturday, Oct. 5 in Parkhill
at 8 p.m. and the next night in Exet-
er host Dorchester at 7:30 p.m.
"It was really a rough one," sand
Pratt of the game, which saw refer-
ee Peter Chisholm hand out close to
100 minutes in penalties.
Exeter came out on fire scoring
three times in the fust period but al-
lowed Goderich to tie the game and
move ahead 4-3. The Hawks tied
the game on a shorthanded goal by
Shayne Robinson, and after again
spotting the Sailors a one -goal lead,
came back with two goals to win it.
Ryan scored shorthanded with un-
der six minutes remaining to give
Exeter the victory.
Singles for Exeter went to Steve
Vandenberk, Wieckowski, Robin-
son and Ryan while Bell scored
two in his first game back.
Exeter 14 - Paris 4
Doug Clark and Scott Schiedel
both had a four -point game against
Paris in Hensall Friday night, as the
Hawks trounced the visiting Moun-
ties 14-4. Clark notched a hatrick
and added an assist while Schiedel
had two goals and two assists. Paul
Manders also collected a pair and
singles went to Chad Ramer, Jamie
Tomes, Dalrymple, Ryan, Robin-
son, Ray Cousineau and Jim Ah-
rens.
I WONDER WHAT
HAPPENED TO THE
SUPERMOBILE
I was announced a few year
ago by somebody or other. It
had big wheels on the back
and little wheels on the front,
so it was going downhill all
the time. Just picture the
mileage!
We`tried installing a couple
of furnaces with wedges un-
der the back corners, just to
see how much difference it
would make. It didn't seem
to help the efficiency much,
but it sure brought out the
worst in people.
I mean, it's not as though
they fell over or anything.

DePrest fires hat trick as
Irish win pre -season contest
By )Hired Groves
LUCAN - Veteran Greg DePrest
scored a shorthanded goal with
five seconds left here Saturday
night as the Lucan Irish edged the
ML Brydges Bulldogs 5-4 in OHA
Junior 'D' hockey league exhibition
action.
The Irish travel to Thamesford to
take on the team that beat them in
the Ontario final a year ago and the
Trojans pay a return visit to Lucan
the following night.
Lucan beat Ayr 7-2 on Friday
night so they remain undefeated in
pre -season play with a 2-0-1
record. Irish coach Ken Needham
said DePrest, the team's leading
scorer last year, will once again be
counted on to carry a big offensive
load.
Against the Bulldogs, he not
only had three goals but set up
Brett Revington for the first goal.
Chris Haskett, just 14 years old,
scored the other goal for Lucan.
Pre -season means mistakes and
the Irish made a few of them and it
was a couple of veteransh

e w o were
having their problems back of the
blueline.
Kevin Leitch coughed up the
puck in his own end and then took
a penalty which resulted in a goal.
Jon McEachern got into a tussle af-
ter he fumbled with the puck be-
hind his own net and he went to the
box for seven minutes. The Bull-
dogs took advantage and came
back and tied the game 2-2.
"They'll straighten up or they
won't be here. We haven't talked to
them, we just let them go," said
Needham.
There are at least a half a dozen
spots open on the Irish roster and
filling those couldmean tough de-
cisions because several rookies
have done well.
Forward Jim Stanton is a tough
player, Revington is aggressive go-
ing to the net and Haskett, although
just a first-year bantam, looks

good. Needham was making more
cuts after Monday's practice.
"Stanton is playing well and so
are the young defencemen. Every -
time you've got a kid you're going
to cut, you have to look again," said
Needham.
With the loss of Todd Hayter and
Jamie Pearce (graduation) and Tim
Hayter who has opted not to return,
the Irish will be looking for a tough
guy. .
"I don't know if we'll have any
but Leitch and (Brad) Bowers will
take that role. But they'll have to
stay out of the box."
In goal the Irish could be the
strongest in the league once again
as overager Bob Szabo suited up
for the fust time on Saturday and
made a couple of key saves.
"(Dan) Jenken is supposed to be
back playing on weekends. With
Bobby I have to confirm he'll be
here."
Jenken is going to the University
of Guelph and it was certain he
would not be back for another year.
"It was a big surprise, I'm very
pleased," said Needam.
Friday night in Lucan's win over
Ayr, McEachern had two goals
with singles from Kevin Leyton, Ja- ,
son Wilson, Mike VanSteensel, Jeff
Stanton and Steve Matthews:
