After eight innings of scoreless fastball, the Royals blanked St. Marys Selects 2-0 in the second game of the best -of -three South Perth Men's Fastball League semi- finals. That evened the series at a game apiece as the Selects won 4-3 in Exeter on Thursday night. The third and deciding game was played last night in St. Marys. Darren Neil lined a leadoff dou- ble down the right field line Mon- day night which saw Selects start- ing pitcher Paul Horenberg head to the bench. Don Rae came on and he hit Exeter's Brian Noyes on the wrist which put two runners on with none out. Neil and Noyes advanced on a passed ball and then with one out, Brent Dawson hit a hard one - hopper to Selects first baseman John Urquhart. He bobbled it then tossed it to the plate but Neil slid and scored what proved to be the winning run. "Considering we were up 3-1 in the ninth inning of the first game, we like to think we should have taken this two straight. But they arc a good ball club," said Exeter coach Fred Cook. Thursday night in the opener, the Royals hada two -run lead but St. Marys tied it in the ninth and a Steve Hart triple followed by Pete Bodenham's single in the tenth was the difference. Both teams had more than one good scoring chance in Monday's game as Urquhart, who started be- hind the plate for the Selects, tossed out three attempted base stealers. "We think that's the weakness of his game, his arm, so we kept try- ing him," said Cook. Urquhart gunned down Mike Desjardine, Sandy Hyde and Dan Heywood. Exeter added an insurance run when Derwyn Hodgins singled up the middle to score Noyes. The Royals left six runners on base while the Selects left just two stranded. On the mound, Hodgins struck out 17 including the first seven bat- ters he faced while allowing just two hits. "It was battle all the way," said Greys coach Ron Westman. "I thought we were going to pull it out." The battle was very evenly matched with each team scoring 33 runs throughout the series. They split games on each others dia- mond and it always came down to the last out as both teams came from behind in the final innings to secure victory. Exeter 8 - St. Pauls 12 Exeter managed to get to the starting pitcher early as they grabbed a 4-0 lead in the second in- ning. SStraight Line c Collision We're here to meet your every need.
