Here Danielle Miners (left), Stacey Case, Shawna Rowe and coach Dennis Rowe go through the basics on ringette equipment. Ringette league aiming to build on past success and growing interest in the sport HENSALL - A step-by-step in- troduction to the sport of Ringette was held in the Hensall arena Satur- day afternoon. Exeter and District Ringette Association president Doug Miners explained that the session was aimed at giving local girls a taste of the team sport that they may never have tried before. Miners said that last year's regis- tration of 72 girls for five teams Shuffleboard Exeter September 11 4 games Ruby Beaver 246 Pearl McKnight 212 Jennie Harris 201 Bill Baechler 190 5 games Delmer Skinner 424 M. I didn't say the cheapest; I said the best. I think we sell the best heat- ing and air conditioning equipment, and have the most qualified people select- ing, designing and installing it, and that we provide the finest after -market service. In short, I think we're the best. So when it's your turn to think about improving your home comfort system, give serious thought to buying it from us, rather than from some other smooth -talking rascal. I'm not sure I care much for the structure of that last par- agraph, but I'm not going to re -type it. BAILEY'S OF HENSALL LTD. "We'd like to increase that (regis- tration) by 20 or 30 percent, if we can," said Miners. The Exeter league began eight years ago with 16 players. But last year, the 72 players ranged in age from 5 to 17. Miners said that with enough interest it may be possible to divide the 7-9 year old Novice group into two teams: Bunny (7 and under) and Novice (8-9). Min- ers said a less -competitive Bunny team would better serve as a train- ing ground for younger players to learn the sport before moving up to higher levels of competition. Miners suspects there may be many girls in the area who are no longer interested in figure skating and may want to join a team sport. If the transition from figure skates to hockey -style skates can be made, then Ringette is an obvious choice. Some girls from the Exeter Asso- ciation have gone on to the highest level of Ringette competition avail- able in Canada by joining London's AA team. "There's room for advancement if you can go," said Miners. I est season's successes for Exeter teams in tournaments and league play is beginning to call attention to the local teams. lit "We're starting to put Exeter on the map as far as ringette is con- cerned," said Miners. "We're basi- cally at the stage where minor hockey was in Exeter 25 years ago." Exeter competes in the Huron - Perth League against teams from St. Marys, Stratford, Goderich, Mitchell, and Forest. There is hope that a team from Clinton will be joining the league this season. Saturday's introduction and ex- planation of the strategy and rules of Ringette will be followed by reg- istration sessions this week. Girls will be able to sign up on Thursday from 5-7 p.m. at the Hensall arena, and Saturday from 12-4 p.m. EXETER Sports Card Show.
