Start season on right track
EXETER - The South Huron
DHS Panthers girls' field hockey
team started the season on the right
paw, capturing the title at their
own Red and Black Invitational
tournament Friday in Exeter.
Fifteen teams converged on the
school for the one -day event, and
coach Jim Workman's squad was
ready for the challenge. Teams
were divided into three pools with
the top team in each pool advanc-
ing to the semi-finals along with a
wild -card team.
In pool play, Becci Farquhar
scored the season's fust goal as the
Panthers squared off against Inger-
soll. Farquhar took a pass deep in
the visitors' zone and flicked a shot
high into the top corner during the

LUCAN - Although the Lucan
Irish have just opened training
camp and are far from nailing
down their roster, management is
looking forward to a good season
with some great prospects.
"1'm really excited about this sea-
son," said Clare Stanley, president
of the club. "Right now we don't
look too bad."
Ken Needham is back as coach
and Jamie Pearce will be by his
side as assistant.
Between 60-65 rookies showed
up last Tuesday when the Irish
opened camp and among them was
some fine talent according to Stan-
ley. The veterans made their first
appearance at practice Friday night
and the group will now hit the ice
three nights a week.
Saturday evening the rookies
travelled to Mt. Brydges for a game
which ended in a 3-3 draw.
"I was rather pleased with the
showing of the rookies," said Stan-
ley. "They certainly went all out."
The Irish find themselves with
the core of their team returning,
having only two players from last
year's roster who went overage.
There are always a few changes,
mostly due to school commitments.
Lost is goalie Dan Jenkins who is
attending the University of Guelph,
and former captain Brian Schuyler
also gone to university.
The Irish play twice in Lucan this
week, and Stanley is looking for-
ward to a good showing.
game's opening minutes. Tina
Campbell added an insurance goal
to seal the victory.
South Huron's second contest
proved frustrating as they came up
against Central Wellington. De-
spite totally dominating their oppo-
nents, they failed to capitalize on
any of their many scoring opportu-
nities. They game ended in a 0-0
tie and would be their only blemish
on the day.
The third game for the Panthers
saw them get back on track as they
faced Resurrection. Farquhar man-
aged the lone goal as South Huron
won 1-0.
In their final game of pool play,
the locals played against nemesis
West Elgin. Darlene O'Rourke pro-
vided the firepower as the Panthers
again won 1-0, securing fust place
in their pool and a birth in the
semi's.
Semi-final action featured South
Huron against Grand River from
Kitchener, a match -up which usual-
ly occurs later in the season at OF -
SAA. Grand River opened the
scoring early in the game, but Wen -
di Sims tied the game midway
through. The teams remained tied
following regulation forcing an
overtime period. Tina Campbell
scored on a short corner to give
South Huron a 2-1 victory.
In the finals, the Panthers came
up against Medway, the only team
in the tournament to go undefeated.
South Huron managed to control
much of the play, and Farquhar's
third goal of the tournament gave
the team a 1-0 win and the touma-
mens.
On Saturday, the Panthers trav-
elled to Kitchener to compete at the
Schoolgirl's Invitational.
South Huron lost their first game
1-0 to Bluevale, the eventual tour-
-itament champions. Campbell
scored the only goal in the second
match on a penalty corner as they
defeated Southwood 1-0, and Far-
quhar notched both goals for a 2-0
win against Georgetown in the
third game. South Huron's final
game of the day ended up in a 0-0
tie against Cameron Heights.
The Panthers finished pool play
in second spot behind Bluevale, but
only the top team in each pool ad-
vanced. South Huron will next see
action Saturday when they compete
at a tournament in Scarborough.
