Zurich crossing guard
rated a success
ZURICH - Zurich council Mon-
day night agreed to continue the
three -times -a -day school crossing
guard system until discussions are
held with the elementary schools
and a parent group.
The crossing guard program now
in its third week has proven very
successful, but guard Helen Ginge-
rich has said there is little use of
the system during the noon hour.
She said only four students use
the crossing at the intersection of
Highway 84 and Frederick street at
noon hour and they are older.
After considerable discussion,
reeve Bob Fisher said, " Let's
check with the school and the par-
ents before we decide on cutting
down any hours for the crossing
Council members received a let-
ter from Cathryn McLachlan thank-
ing them for providing the crossing
g service.
She said in part, " I can under-
stand the difficulty of weighing the
obvious cost of hiring a guard,
against the less obvious effects. We
may never know how many young
lives will be saved as a result of
your decision, but I know it's hard
to justify spending money that
hasn't been budgeted?
Mrs. McLachlan concluded, " I
also know that there are students
who won't use this service, and that
will be frustrating, but rm sure
with the co-operation of parents,
school staff and village officials,
we can help our children live and
grow in safety. Again, thank you?
