Turning lane still a vague
possibility for Exeter
EXETER - Faced with the oppor-
tunity of a blank slate on which to
draw new lines, Town council were
once again considering the sense,
or lack of sense, of Main Street
traffic flows.
As of last Tuesday's council
meeting, the newly paved Main
Street was still without a centre di-
viding line and council were won-
dering if the time had not come to
make room for a turning lane at the
intersection of Sanders and Main
Streets.
Councillor Harry Klungel first
brought tip the suggestion at the
meeting that the width of Main
Street at that point could be put to
better use, so long as the need for a
turning lane did not cause the loss
of too many on street parking spac-
es.
"Perhaps eliminating some park-
ing spaces there would allow traffic
to flow more readily," conceded
councillor Ben Hoogenboom.
Works superintendent Glenn
Kells pointed out that only the
width of three lanes would be need-
ed, but the mandatory left-hand
tum lane in the centre would need
to be marked overhead.
Deputy Reeve Lossy Fuller in-
sisted the public works committee
and the police department
should discuss the loss of parking
and possible traffic problems be-
fore going ahead with such a plan.
Water meters do
the job in Lucan
LUCAN - Works superintendent
Doug Johnston reported to council
Monday night on a survey he re-
cently conducted on water con-
sumption over the past two years in
the village.
Johnston found that with water
meters now in use in all homes and
businesses, the number of gallons
of water going through the meters
in the first six months of 1991 was
almost five million gallons less
than for the same period a year ear-
lier.
He also worked out the cost for
the 29 million gallons used this
year at $19,138.96 using rates of 71
cents per thousand gallons that will
be charged when the Lake Huron
water system is in place. Johnston
added, " That's twice as much as
we would pay for pumping our
own."
Johnston noted that there
wouldn't be as much labour needed
for the new system and reeve Larry
Hotson was quick to comment, "
We won't have to spend money on
our wells. One year that was as
Stopped
short
sidewalk
no mystery
EXETER - Some town residents
were a little perturbed that after the
hue and cry of the decision to put a
sidewalk on Pryde Boulevard, the
work began, but then mysteriously
stopped.
Some even went so far as to won-
der why the sidewalk stopped short
of the mayor's house.
However, works superintendent
Glenn Kells said that the problem
lies not with the sidewalk, but with
the other major project on the other
side of the tracks. The installation
of a sewage forcemain diverted the
works crews away from the side-
walk fora few weeks, but he said
Pryde Boulevard can expect to
have a complete sidewalk by early
next week.
McLaughlin
throws hat in
Lucan reeve
ring
LUCAN -Tom McLaughlin told
fellow council members Monday
night that he has registeaed and will
be a candidate for the position of
reeve when next month's nomina-
tion date comes around.
A current councillor, McLaughlin
will be attempting to fill the spot
now held by Larry Hooson who
took over as clerk of the township
of Biddulph several months ago
and will not be running again.
At the same time, deputy -reeve
Harry Wraith indicated he was reg-
istered for his same position on vil-
lage council.
When asked his intentions, conn -
cilia Wyse Smith replied, " Right
now 1 am leaning towards contest-
ing the posidon of deputy -reeve."
The other member of the present
council. Bob Taylor said he was
undecided about yew
another three ye
j
term. He oklngly added, " No. 1
will not be running for deputy -
reeve."
Clerk Ron Reymer said several
other Lucan residents have received
nomination papers, but have not yet
registered.
much as $20,000."
In concluding the discussion on
the saving of water with meters in-
stalled, Hotson said, " They have
certainly done the job."
Council agreed to hold judge-
ment on the turning lane issue until
public works could report back to
them.
However, the very next morning
the centre line for the street was re-
painted on the fresh asphalt, but
Kells confirmed that the painted
lines are still not the problem.
Overhead signage marking a left -
tum -only lane would likely have to
be installed on standards higher and
longer than the present traffic sig-
nals. The cost, he said, would be
significant.
"It's really not a go-ahead at this
point," said Kells.
