Old Town Hall needs a new roof EXETER - Exeter and District Heritage Foundation have told town council that the Old Town Hall needs a new roof. The cost will be either $14,000 or $18,000 depending on what kind of roof is installed. Bob Heywood told council the Foundation got a quote of $13,690 plus GST to replace the existing as- phalt shingles, or $4,450 more to replace it with a cedar shake roof. "What we'd like to see is a cedar shake roof. That is what we be- lieve was originally on the roof," said Heywood, noting that the extra cost would buy a roof which would last three or four times longer. Heywood said the Heritage Foun- dation is prepared to pay the $13,690 and would like the town to pick up the tab on the rest. He said the Foundation is still working on • Come in ax d check out Qt* BEST BELIE 424 Main St.'Eke (519))235 33 the assumption that the town will eventually return its offices and council chambers to that building. "We'd like to see you take it over," said Heywood, but council members made no comment on that subject, perhaps reflecting on the furor that ensued when the idea was last proposed. The roof on the tower is not pres- ently in need of repair, but it will be an expensive job when it is due to the need for scaffolding on the steep roof. Mayor Bruce Shaw asked Hey- wood if the foundation could pay for the entire job and have the town reimburse them when funds were available. "The point is we haven't budget- ed for this," said Shaw. Heywood said that was a possi- bility and also suggested town staff find out if a heritage grant is availa- JADON HOME IMPROVEMENTS Trim carpentry, replacement windows, doors, soffit, fascia, decks, fences, framing, rec rooms. When asked by council how much use the hall gets, Heywood said it is rented out "once or twice a week" over the course of the year, but even with improved kitchen fa- cilities, it has a hard time compet- ing with the Youth Centre and Ma- sonic Hall for banquet rentals, especially since its staircase limits its access. Councillor Harry Klungel agreed that the extra cost for cedar was worthwhile. "The original roof was cedar shakes, then 1 feel for heritage's sake, it should be cedar shakes again," said Klungel. Bob said the 15-16 year-old roof has caused some problems due to deterioration. "We'd like to see it for sure go on this fall," said Heywood. Shaw suggested that Heywood book the local contractor and the choice of asphalt or cedar would be made before work began.
