The Hawks opened their Western Ontario Junior 'D' training camp in Hensall last Wednesday, and coaches John Kernick,George Pratt Jr. were impressed with the 49 skaters in attendance. "We'll probably look at about 60 players before the cuts are made," said Pratt. "We know of at least 2 or 3 more rookies yet to come out, but there will probably be more." The coaches expect their num- bers will increase as other teams, such as the St. Marys Lincolns, make cuts. The Hawks will miss the services of centre Jason Hey- wood this season, as he has already been signed by the Lincolns. Cen- tre Andrew Barton is also out with a broken collar bone suffered in a St. Marys tryout, but he and sever- al other veterans are expected to report. Should the puck bounce their way, Exeter could be fortunate enough to see most of last year's roster return. "I was pretty impressed with some of the rookies," said Kemick. "There's only about 10 spots sewn up which means everyone better be working hard." An advantage for the junior 'D' Karate youth group Instructor Brian Decker awards a diploma to Lance Bedard at Tyndall's Karate School Saturday in the Exeter Lion's Youth Centre. Unfortunately, this year saw four players cross the age barrier, with the Hawks permitted to sign only two. Last year's captain Jeff Dal- rymple heads the cast followed by forwards Cory Colhoun, Jim Dick- ens and goaltender Dean Fratar- cangeli. "Cuts are always hard to make because you've got to see how kids will react in a game," said Kernick. "You can't always base a decision on what you see in practice because some guys are just practice players." Exeter already has several St. Marys and Parkhill players in camp, as well as seven goalies. By the time the last couple of pre- season games roll around, both Kernick and Pratt hope to have the roster set at 20. GOOD THING; THEY ALSO SHORT- EN LIVES I use a computer for a lot of things, (including typing this). One is an accounting program, and when I exceed the capacity of the comput- er's memory a message flashes on the monitor tell- ing me so, and denies me ac- cess to the program. Then the correct procedure, ac- cording to the manual, is to purge old files, but I can't, because I have to be able to have access to the program to purge old files. I have a phone number in Vancouver to call that allows people there to talk down to me while we go through a con- voluted procedure. BAILEY'S l OF HENSALL LTD.
