Exeter Co-op Junior Scott Russell unloads a pitch during the Western Ontario Baseball Associ-
ation Championship game Saturday against Lucan in Exeter, while a baserunner attempts to
steal second. Exeter won both the game and title with a nine run fifth inning.
Greys move into final game
ST. PAULS - The Exeter Greys
and St. Pauls Chiefs remained
deadlocked at two games apiece
heading into last night's final game
to decide the Huron -Perth Ladies
Fastball League championship.
Results were unavailable at press
time.
Exeter 5, St. Pauls 7
A five run sixth inning by the
Chiefs Sunday evening in St.
Pauls, forced a fifth and deciding
game against Exeter for the title af-
ter the Greys had gone ahead two
games to one.
"It was a great ball game," com-
mented Greys coach Ron West -
man. "We held them a couple
times with the bases loaded, but
they did get to us."
Exeter exploded for five runs of
their own in the second, when Patti
Centennials
drop close one
WALLACEBURG - Despite
controlling play for much of the
game and receiving a strong goal-
tending effort from Craig Winbow,
the Exeter Centennials dropped a
close match 1-0 to Wallaceburg
Strikers in Wallaceburg Friday
evening.
Exeter opened the game with a
solid offensive attack enjoying
many good scoring opportunities,
but failed to capitalize.
Midway through the first half,
the Strikers notched the winning
goal on a well placed free kick.
Players bumped while going for a
loose ball and Wallaceburg was
awarded a free kick from 12 yards
out. They made no mistake, curl-
ing the ball around the wall set of
Centennial players just inside the
top comer of the far post.
During the second half, Exeter
again pressed but met with a strong
goaltender who made many key
stops.
The Centennials have only two
games remaining in their schedule,
both of which are on the mad. Ex-
eter will travel to Chatham to face
the Express September 15, and will
be in St. Columban September 29.
Down and Carla Wolfcamp both
singled and were driven in by
Brenda Bell's double. With Bell
on base, Kendra Arthur singled
bringing Lisa Henderson to the
plate. With two out and two on
Henderson didn't disappoint as she
stroked a three -run homer to give
Exeter a comfortable lead.
The Greys bats then grew quiet
as they were held to only four hits
over the next five innings. Exeter
gave up two runs in the fifth and St.
Pauls came to life in their half of
the sixth, scoring 5 unanswered
runs to win the game.
Exeter 11, St. Petits 6
Trailing 6-4 after three innings,
the Greys bounced back and scored
seven big runs in the fifth frame
last Tuesday night.
Centrefielder Sandi Fremlin had
an outstanding night at the plate as
she went 3 -for -4 including a home
run, a triple and a single as well as
scoring three times.
Pitcher Gayle Beuerman provid-
ed lots of offence as she had a triple
which knocked in two runs and
blasted a fifth inning home run.
Kendra Arthur had a pair of dou-
bles, and Patti Down and Brenda
Bell each had a pair of singles.
In all, the Greys pounded out 16
hits compared to seven by visiting
St. Pauls.
The Downtown Dollies came out on top of the Exeter Ladies Sio-Pitch League this season. In
the front row, from left, are Joan Cooper, Deneen Sebastian, Barb Tumbull, Pat Down and Hei-
di Elliott. In the second row, from left, are Carolyn May, Estelle Wilson, Shelley Weber, and
Marylin Waldeck. Behind, from left, are Dianne Shapton, Corlette Elder, Pat Cottrell, and Bren-
da Brand. The Dollies, said to have four grandmothers in their ranks, also won the A -final of
the Ladies Slo-pitch tournament in town this weekend.
