Scatchard dinner and dance
By Roberta Walker
GRAND BEND - Friends, neigh-
bours and business associates of
David and Valorie Scatcherd gath-
ered in the new Oakwood Inn Con-
vention Centre last Wednesday eve-
ning to celebrate a successful
season in the newly expanded Oak-
wood facilities. After canapes and
cocktails were served on the terrace
overlooking the golf course, the
guests adjourned to the 500 -seat
convention centre. Tom Lawson
acted as emcee for the evening, in-
troducing a guest list which includ-
ed Paul Beaston, president of the
Toronto Blue Jays, Don McDou-
gall, former chairman of Labatt's
and one of the founding members
of the Blue Jays, and Peter Widder-
ington, present chairman of Labatt's
and CEO of the Blue Jays.
Dave Scatcherd is a major share-
holder in Labatt's and is an avid
supporter of the Blue Jays team.
Donald McDougall became presi-
dent of Labatt's Breweries at age 36
and was a key figure in the consor-
tium which funded and established
Canada's second major league base-
ball team. From worst to first in
one decade, the Jays are still ahead
of the Detroit Tigers in the race for
the American League Eastern pen-
nant.
Other guests included London
Regional Arts Museum director
Nancy Poole, Barbara and Jack
Humphrey of Hawaii, and retired
U.W.O. business administration
professor Jack Wettlaufer. The
Grand Bend Cruising Club was
weU represented, a% were local
business people and Oakwood Park
neighbours.
Music was provided by the Glen
Bennet Band of London, to dance
the night away, or to visit on the
terraces, a glittering gala to end the
summer of 91 in Grand Bend,

pointed may be happy to know that

fifty-fifty draw at the last bingo,
and visitors came from as far away
as New Liskeard, Ontario.

Andrews, and Marg Gow. The

Catholic news
GRAND BEND - Labour Day
weekend marks the departure of
many summer residents from the
Grand Bend parish of Immaculate
Heart of Mary, so Rev. Paul Beck
bade everyone a Happy Thanksgiv-
ing, a Merry Christmas, Happy
New Year, and a blessed Easter.
The men of the Order of Alham-
bra held their annual after -mass
collection on the Labour Day week-
end at the parishes in Grand Bend
and Forest. The monies raised by
Algarva 1168 all go toward their
charitable works with the mentally
handicapped of the community.
Labour Day in the village was
relatively quiet and low-key this
year. Parking spaces could still be
found, it took less than five minutes
to clear the Main Street corner on
Sunday afternoon. The back streets
were also quiet during the night
hours, unlike the May 24 and July 1
weekends.
Many families were occupied
with the traditional ordeal of pack-
ing their scholars off to university
or college. It was certainly a jolt
for us, installing our eldest in resi-
dence at Toronto, leaving an empty
room at home.
A glance around the dormitory
hallways revealed that it's not just
parents who say tearful goodbyes,
but the excitement of the new ad-
venture ahead soon overrit}es the
tears. On Tuesday, pests taking
their eldest or youngest to kinder-
garten were no doubt feeling much
the same emotions.
Oakwood .Association

GRAND BEND -The Oak-
wood Park Association held its
Labour Day meeting at Oak-
wood Inn Sunday morning. Bin
Johnstone is taking over from
John Skinner as president of the
OPA.
Congratulations are in order
for Tom Sullivan, a Michigan
resident of Oakwood, who was
proud to announce that after 20
years of play on Oakwood's
Golf Course, he finally scored a
hole -in -one on number nine.
Many local businesses held
end -of -the -season staff parties
for all the employees who work
the summer months and are now
returning to school. Finnegan's
Irish Restaurant, the Colonial
Hotel, the Gables, the Thirsty
Fox, and the Subway to name a
few, held parties last week for
the departing students who were
heading back to school.
