teams in the tournament, Merriton
and came away with a big 9-7 win.
They jumped into an early 5-0 lead
but it was two runs in the sixth that
made the difference.
in the sixth, Ramer and Steve
Farquhar both walked and eventual-
ly scored. Farquhar and Parsons
both had two key hits in this game.
"They really came together in the
tournament," said Gillespie of his
team's effort in the provincial
championship.
Shawn Gillespie started on the
mound for Dashwood against Mer-
riton and gave up just one hit be-
fore giving way to Derek Masse
who, like his brother Danny, is a
very hard thrower.
"That was the key to that game,"
said Gillepsie.
"They (Merriton) were coming
back on us.
Dashwood opened the tourna-
ment with a disappointing 8-4 lass
to Georgetown.
This one was all over in the first
inning as Georgetown pounded out
three hits, were given three walks
and led 6-0 at the end of the first in-
ning.
Dashwood got a run in the sec-
ond inning and three more in the
third.

SPORT:
Dashwood plays well, win two games
at OBA midget 'C' championship tourney
By Fred Groves
EXETER - What if...
That's the question the Dashwood
midgets pondered Sunday night as
they were eliminated from the On-
tario Baseball Association 'C'
championship tournament.
Dashwood put forth an outstand-
Mg effort winning a pair of games
but bowed out to the eventual tour-
nament champions in a close 5-3
game.
Darkness meant the game had to
be halted at the Alvin Willett Field
Atattitiof
Dashwood's Jamie Ramer, right; kicked up a lot of dirt in, Sunday's game against Merriton.
Ramer was safe as he slid into third base while the ball bounces away.
A big delivery by Dashwood pitcher Derek Masse meant a big
win over Merriton at the OBA championships on the weekend.

Port Hope beat Tillsonburg
Big first inning leads
to provincial crown
EXETER - Lack of pitching hurt Tillsonburg as they were overcome by
a tough Port Hope team here in the final of the Ontario Baseball Associa-
tion midget 'C' final.
Port Hope, going undefeated in the eight -team provincial final e
took advantage of four walks in the first inning tori----- on to a fairly easy
11-3 win.
It was all over in the first inning as Port Hope built a commanding 5-0
lead. Ryan Balazs started on the mound for Tillsonburg but after getting
the fust batter to fly out got into trouble.
Balazs was replaced by Derek Pardo, followed by Brent Vandenneucker I
and Trevor Lamb came on in the third inning to finish the game.
In the first inning, Mark ONeil and Jason Craig got back-to-back singles
followed by a walk to Jonathan Smith and Paul Boncardo was safe ori a
fielders' choice.
Wayne Bilger, Pete Boncardo and Brett Mills all received walks before
the Tillsonburg defence could get two outs and get out of the inning.
On the Port Hope mound, Jason Green worked six innings before giving
way to Wayne Bilger. Tillsonburg got a run in the third frame, another in
the seventh and one in the eighth inning.
The high scoring game was a bit of a surprise as earlier in the tourna-
ment, Port Hope edged Tillsonburg 3-2. Tillsonburg got to the final after al
7-3 win over Collingwood and Pon Hope had to eliminate host Dashwood
before they could reach the final.

after four -and -a -half innings and
tournament rules did not allow for
it to be finished Monday morning.
Port Hope took a 1-0 lead in the
fust inning but Mark Keller ripped
a three -run double in the second in-
ning and Dashwood took a two run
lead. But Port Hope came back in
their half of the second and got four
runs.
Derek Masse came on to pitch for
the locals and managed to shut Port
Hope down.
"Derek Masse was in and he was
' pitching well. I was looking for-
ward to playing another two in-
nings but the rules are the rules,"
said Dashwood coach John Gilles-
pie.
"I'm sure they didn't want to see
us any more because we gave them
all they could handle," he added.
Dashwood opened the eight team
tournament with an 8-4 loss against
Georgetown early Saturday morn-
ing but bounced back and hand-.__
mered Wallaceburg 13-1 later that
night and surprised Merriton with a
9-7 upset Sunday afternoon.
"We wanted to complete the
game (against Port Hope) ibis
(Monday) morning but they insist-
ed we play by the rules. We had
runners in scoring position twice
and if we had a set of lights here or
another hour of daylight, I liked our
chances of coning back and at least
tieing them up."
Merriton beat Essex, one of the
tournament winning hopefuls, earli-
er in the day. Against Merriton,
Dashwood got a good pitching per-
formance' from Shawn Gillespie
who went five innings. When Dash-
wood took on Wallaceburg, it was
hard -throwing righthander Derek
Masse who handcuffed the opposi-
tion's offence.
"All the teams in this tournament
were sound, competent teams," said
Gillespie.
"In that particular game (Wallac-
eburg) we got an outstanding pitch-
ing performance from Danny
Masse. He pitched a complete
game throwing. really hard and he
had his change up going which had
the Wallaceburg guys guessing."
Against Wallaceburg, Dashwood
knocked the cover off the ball as
they pounded out 11 hits. Wallace -
burg also gave up eight walks,
three of those to leadoff batter, sec-
ond baseman Jamie Ramer.
Scott Parsons swung a big bat
with a triple and a double while
Danny Masse had a pair of singles
and scored two runs.
