Wolfcamp has two key hits
Huron -Perth ladies final
series is all tied up
ST. PAULS - It was a case of a little too late for the Exeter Greys here
Monday night as they lost a close 5-4 playoff decision to the Chiefs.
The game saw the best -of -five Huron -Perth Ladies Fastball League
championship tied at a game each. Exeter won the opener last Tuesday 5-
3. Game three was played last night in Exeter.
St. Pauls took a commanding 4-0 lead in the fust inning as they pound-
ed out five hits off of Greys' pitcher Patti Down. The defence behind
Down was not very good either in the opening frame as Exeter made twO
errors, five miscues on the night.
"I think they were good solid hits," said Exeter coach Georgina Re-
ynolds of the Chiefs' offence.
"We usually have one shakey inning but it's usually the last inning and
not the first."
St. Pauls started their first inning rally when Terri Griffith connected'
with a base hit up the middle. Marilyn Murray put one through the gap at
short and the second baseman Cate Heshon was safe with a bunt single.
That loaded the bases and with none out Becky Brunston blasted one up
the middle to score a pair of runs. Down settled down getting the next two
batters out before Lorraine Bailey singled in two more runs.
The Chiefs padded their lead to 5-0 in the second when Murray was safe
on an error and scored on another Exeter error. St. Pauls nearly made it 6-
0 but Brunston was tossed out at the plate.
St. Pauls left the bases loaded in both the first and second innings.
Exeter finally got rolling in their half f the fourth inning when third
baseman Gayle Beuerman was safe on an error, moved on Sandi Fremlin's
bunt and scored on Dianne Willis' single. Willis stole second and came
home Down's base hit. Carla Wolfcamp also singled as the Greys left two
stranded.
"They never give up," said Reynolds.
Exeter got closer in the sixth with two more runs in the sixth. Fremlin
hit one hard up the middle and a hard high chopper by Reynolds could not
be handled. With one out, Down was called out when the umpire said the
ball hit her when she tried to bunt and was out of the batters boxtoo
quick.
Wolfcamp got her second hit of the game, scoring two more runs but
she was tossed out at first when she dove back to the bag.
Last Tuesday night, the Greys scored three runs in the fifth inning in the
game that saw catcher Kendra Arthur hit a home run and Wolfcamp had a
triple.
