New fitness centre beginning to take shape
By Ray Lewis
EXETER -
` Around the first
of January every
year, people
go through a
phase where
they swear off various vices and
promise to conform. There are
many reasons for this strange ritu-
al, the most common being finance
or health. People attempt to abol-
ish a number of impurities, be it
cigarettes, sweets or the number of
hours spent lazing before a televi-
sion.
In 1989, Bill Montgomery made
a resolution to get in shape. Sound
familiar? At the age35 he came
face to face with the onset of the
aging process. In sder to combat
it, he improved h.diet, began a
vigorous exercise program and
took off 60 pounds in eight
months, shrinking his waistline
from 42 inches to 32.
"It was a tough challenge but I
did it," said Montgomery. "The
question was there how to keep it
off."
Together with his wife Heather,.
a fitness enthusiast, this new desire
instilled in him the urge to create a
place where people could work
out. Hence, Lifters Fitness Sys-
tems opened yesterday as Exeter's
newest fitness centre.
"There are still a few things to
do," said Heather. "But we're real-
ly looking forward to it."
Bill began making plans for the
centre over a year ago and, once

UCO and •

unite
MISSISSAUGA - It is the intent
of the United Co-operatives of On-
tario (UCO) to form a joint venture
with a wholly owned subsidiary of
Sunoco Inc., announced UCO Pres-
ident Claude Gauthier Monday.
UCO and its major supplier of
petroleum, Sunoco, will create the
venture to expand their services to
rural Ontario. Currently, UCO and
independent co-operatives - mem-
bers of UCO - operate 38 Co-op
Gas Bars, have 55 bulk petroleum
plants and a home -heating fuel, die-
sel and propane business. Sunoco
will be COAfsibutrng two_bulk opex-
ations and a number of rural gas
stations to the venture.
The formation of the joint ven-
ture is subject to regulatory approv-
als. Sunoco must also receive ap-
proval from its board of directors
and from Suncor Inc., its parent
company. In September, UCO's
Board of Directors and Senior
Management will seek the required
internal and external approvals to
transfer UCO's petroleum assets to
the joint venture.

the correct location had been cho-
sen, things started to move rather
quickly. Lifters is located on
Highway 83 east across from
Northlander, and appears as if it's
the right place to be. So many in-
quiries have been made since hang-
ing their sign, that the Montgom-
ery's have had to put up many oth-
ers explaining they would not be
opening until September 3.
"You wouldn't believe how many
people have been in here asking if
we're open," said Bill.
In terms of equipment, Lifters
has institutional grade apparatus.
In fact, much of it you would find
by strolling into a Toronto Argo-
nauts training facility.
"We've got some very good ma-
chines here," said Bill. "Especially
the computerized aerobics ma-
chines."
The couple has made it a point of
attempting to get the latest equip-
ment, but are prepared to change
with the times.
"That's one of the reasons why
aerobics has been so popular," said
Heather. "They're always changing
so it doesn't get boring."
Boredom is something you won't
have to contend with at rafters.
Consider the options. A Pr cor 9.4
treadmill electronically adjusts
while walldng or running, simulat-
ing hill training by offering the user
a 12 degree incline or -3 degree de-
cline. Lifters also has a pair of
Tectrix Climbmaxes, computerized
stairclimbers which are networked
together to enable trainees to com-
pete in monitored competitions.
But probably the most amazing
piece of equipment at Lifters is the
Precor 8.8 bicycle simulator. It's
much more than an exercise bike.
In addition to monitoring speed,
distance, calories burned and length
of time in use, the simulator offers
a three-dimensional graphic screen
like a video game. It actually simu-
lates the rider on one of six realis-
tic, countryside courses, giving the
cyclist the privilege of watching
scenery roll by. Want an extra
challenge? With a push of a button
riders are introduced to race against
you.
"When I went shopping I didn'tl
actually have this in mind," said
Bill. But After riding it, it was so
cjuiet `Oa smooth and had : the
graphics, it almost sold itself."
Aside from the computerized ap-
paratus, Lifters has two lat pull-
down machines, a leg press, univer-
sal and, of course, a host of
weights.
Lifters will also have a qualified
fitness instructor available as of
September 12. Pam Lowe will be
arriving from the YMCA in Prince
George, British Columbia, to assist
with individual programs. She
brings with her a lot of experience,
and the ability to correct errors in
form.
"That's something we were very
concerned about," said Heather.
"Many people have complaints
about flaws they develop in rou-
tines which go uncorrected."

The fitness centre is complete
with central air for a comfortable
working climate, and the large
change rooms are equipped with
showers. If you want to give those
muscles a break when you've com-
pleted your workout, there is also
an eight -seater, glassed -in hot tub.
"These days, people want the
best," said Bill.
The centre will operate seven
days a week, from 9 a.m. - 10 p.m.
weekdays, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Sat-
urdays and Sunday from noon until
4 p.m. Right now, the only obsta-
cle left to contend with is demand.
Laughs Bill, "We're considering
opening at seven."
