All experi- ments tend to show that it is com- pletely harmless to humans. All kinds of tests have been held in the Excited States and BST is being touted as the greatest thing since milking machines to help dairy fanners. Maybe. But I see no reason why it should be licensed in Canada and I will probably get the public rela- tions people at the Ontario Milk Marketing Board angry for suggest- ing that BST is unnecessary. What is it? It is a hormone that gets dairy cattle producing more milk. as much in some tests as a 25 percent increase. Others are a trifle more pessimistic and suggest that the incres would be closer to 15 pie'' No matter. Why do dairy farmers need to increase production by more than 15 percent anyway? We have more milk being produced in this province now than we can use. Twenty years ago, we had close to 20,000 dairy farmers in Ontario. Today, we have about half that many. Dairy fanners have become much more efficient without BST. And they will continue along the same line. Experts suggest that milk pro- duction will increase by 20 percent in the next 20 years anyway simply because dairy farmers are that pro- gressive. So why do they need an artificial hormone to increase production even more? To be competitive, they say. More than a year ago, I wrote 'about BST and said why not? Why shouldn't Canadian farmers use it if it is supposed to be so good and is harmless? I am about to change my mind. I do not think we need it. Farmers are having enough trouble staying on the land now without increasing milk production artificially. Adding that kind of an increase will simply decrease the number of dairy farm- ers. It scared me when I found out that tate drug was being used in Canada - in Ontario - in a couple of herds on an experimental basis, herds owned by people who should have known better. From 1985 to 1988, milk from test herds was sold to consumers. Cows from these ex- perimental herds had been injected with the drug every day. It was the secrecy surrounding the sale of the milk and the meat from the test cows that bothered me. Those responsible were chas- tised - they got a slap on the wrist for it - but it should never have hap- pened. These internation- al or, better still, transnational com- panies, want the drug introduced simply because they will snake money. I do not think these company ex- ecutives in their big -city ivory tow- ers give a fiddler's damn about whether or not their new miracle drug helps farmers compete. They are interested in making profits. If 10,000 dairy fanners in Ontario use that drug every day to make more milk, those companies can chuckle all the way to the bank.
