Survey says violence on the
rise in Ontario schools
TORONTO - Marion Boyd, Min-
ister of Education, has commented
on a survey released yesterday by
the Ontario Teachers Federation.
The Federation released figures
which indicate a rise in the number
of physical and verbal assaults
against teachers and staff in Onta-
no's schoolr'
"I'm deeply concerned about vio-
lence in our schools and society in
general. The Federation can count
on my Ministry to help eliminate
the threat of violence against teach-
ers."
The Ministry intends to meet
with the OTF to discuss its survey
and recommendations.
"My Ministry provides support to
teachers and staff on issues of vio-
lence and anti -social behaviour in a
variety of ways, and we must con-
tinue to expand our efforts," said
Mrs. Boyd.
The Ministry provides policy and
resource documents that give prac-
tical suggestions on dealing with
intruders on school property and
examine theresponsibility and au-
thority of secondary schools to pro-
vide young people with discipline
and direction. Secondary schools
must have a clear code of student
behaviour which is developed with
the help of parents, students and
staff for the approval of the board.
Other initiatives include:
- an internal Ministry work group
which has been reviewing legisla-
tion and policies pertaining to vio-
lence and antisocial behaviour;
- Ministry involvement in two
government related programs: Sex-
ual Assault Prevention and Family
Violence Prevention Initiatives;
- Helping Children Adjust a Tri -
Ministry Project, that identifies
practices that help children with so-
cial adjustment problems;
- The Secondary School Students

at Rick Project is a six year study
which will address the needs of ad-
olescents in Ontario who are expe-
riencing psychosocial and educa-
tion difficulties.
"Schools are a reflection of socie-
ty - so addressing the issue of vio-
lence in the schools and educating
our young people is a good starting
point for modifying behaviour and
putting a stop to all types of vio-
lence including assault, sexual as-
sault and abuse and violence
against women" said Mrs. Boyd.
Students must also be accounta-
ble for their actions, Mrs. Boyd
said. "Assault is a crime. We need
to make it clear through our actions
that we don't condone it."
