Junior 'D' hockey clubs prepare
Hawks open camp next week
By Fred Groves
HENSALL - The ice goes into
the arena here Tuesday and the
next night it will take quite a
pounding as the Exeter Junior 'D'
Hawks suit up for their first work-
out.
Tryouts begin Wednesday from
9-11 p.m., go again Friday 8-10
p.m., Monday from 9-11p.m. and
the same time on Wednesday.
"There has been quite a few in-
vites mailed out. It is an open
camp but there have been some
personal invitations," said presi-
dent Wayne Dickins.
Dickins is pleased to announce
that once again, Al Quinn is the
manager while John Kernick and
George Pratt, Jr. are the coaches.
The Hawks had no overagers
last year which was a big plus.
However, of the possible overag-
ers this year (each team is allowed
two) there are four candidates in
forwards Cory Colhoun and Jim
Dickins along with goalie Dean
Fratarcart eli and Last year's cap-
tain Jeff Dalrymple.
Dickins probably won't be re-
turning, because, according to his
father Wayne, he can't play his
style of hockey. Two seasons ago,
the rugged winger had to have his
spleen removed which meant he
had to play a little cautious.
"He . can't adjust to any other
style of hockey. When he plays his
kind of hockey, he hits hard, said
Wayne.
Three-year veteran centre Derek
Shackleton has hinted he will be
trying to crack the St. Marys Jun-
ior 'B' Lincolns lineup. Although it
will take a lot of offence away
from the Hawks, Dickins is still
banking on putting a winning club
on the ice.
"We're going to be really strong
on scouting and recruiting players
this season."
"The nucleus of the team will be
back. Hopefully we'll have some
players from St. Marys and Park-
hill," said Quinn.
The obstacle that prevents the
Hawks from winning their division
is the Lucan Irish,
"We don't want to be the brides-
maid again, we've done that the
last four or five years. We've
talked quite extensively about
this," said Dickins.
A keys the Ha*YS success
will be goalie Clint McCann. The
18 -year-old veteran could be
joined in the cage by either over -
ager Fratarcangeli or Josh Sy-
mons.
Irish face rebuilding year
LUCAN - Although the Lucan
Irish don't open thea camp until
Tuesday, September 10, coach
Ken Needham says there will be
at least seven or eight key players
that have to be replaced.
The defending divisional cham-
pions, who once again had to set-
tle for second best in the provin-
cial final, will have their first
workout at 8 p.M. and just four
days later, suit up for their open-
ing exhibition game in Mt,
Brydgcs against the Bulldogs.
The Irish have lost goalie Dan
Jenkins who will be attending the
University of Guelph. Also a
probable no-show to the Irish
camp will be last year's rookie
sensation, Jeremy Jemoc who will
link up with a Junior 'B' club,
probably the Strathroy Blades.
"I'm looking forward to the re-
building job, it will be a pretty
good challenge with all the spots
we have to fill," said Needham.
The biggest void comes defen-
sively, gone is Jenkins and goalie
Bob Szabo is an ovcrager. Mark
Dunn who was with the Irish and
played periodically last season
could see a lot of time.
On the blueline, Jamie Pearce
moves from on the ice to behind
the bench as an assistant coach and
veteran Todd Hayter has graduat-
ed. Question marks also surround
forward Dan Brand, Tim Hayter,
Greg DePrest, Steve Matthews and
Brad Bowers.
"We have a lot of holes, more
than we have had in the last couple
of years," said Needham.
Last yew's team captain Brian
Schuyler is also going to universi-
ty.
Lucan's tryouts continue on Sep-
tember 12 and 13 in Lucan at 8
p.m. The next day will see them
travel to Mt. Brydges for a game
against the scrappy Bulldogs. On
the 27 and 28 they have back-to-
back pre -season encounters with
the defending Ontario champions,
Thamesford Trojans.
"I don't think it maters much in
exhibition. You have to play some-
one to see how good they arc.
Maybe playing those teams is a
good eye opener and it will help us
make some decisions," said Need-
ham.
While it may be a rebuilding year
for the Irish, it could quite possibly
be the last season as a Junior 'D'
club. Executive members have tried
for many months to bump up to
Junior 'C.
"I guess it's up the league. We're
going to pursue it. There is a prob-
lem with travel, it's expensive,"
said Irish president Clare Stanley.
Lucan's executive had hoped a
couple of other Junior 'D' teams
would ttaake the move as well to
cut dawn on travel.
"The competition is the same in
both leagues," said Stanley.
