Dietrich on national
championship team
EXETER - It's been a successful summer for
Leanne Dietrich as the South Huron District High
School graduate was a member of the Ontario under -
21 team which won the Canadian field hockey cham-
pionship.
Dietrich, captain of the 1990 South Huron Panthers
provincial high school champions, played left wing
different from her right wing position which she is
accustomed to.
"It was a switch, I started to like it but I hated it at
first," said Dietrich.
Monday morning she brought her skills to the field
in which she spent as a high school star, helping
coach Jim Workman get the Panthers' ready for the
upcoming season.
"They look pretty good, they know each other,"
said Dietrich.
Last year the Panthers won the Huron -Perth title
but weren't as lucky at OFSAA as they were a year
ago.
Dietrich is entering her second year of psychology
studies at the University of Waterloo where last year,
was a member of the field hockey team. It's question-
able how that team looks for the fall.
"I don't know. We had a pretty good season, fourth
in our league. We haven't been together that much."
Being selected to the Ontario under -21 team was a
long process as she went to a tryout camp in Novem-
ber and after a long winter the team began workouts
again in April.
"We played in the Montreal Cup on July 6-7 and
the week after that we were selected. I did okay at the
Montreal Cup so I figured I had a good chance."
She made the team of 15 in which nearly 40 were
trying for a spot on and added more honors to her list
as a successful field hockey player.

are the two key ingredients behind
the newly -formed senior mens golf

to participate.
"All competitions are team
events with the total team score

week. Group organizers are Bud
Preszcator, Ron Westman, Gib
Dow and Fletcher.

ORANGEVILLE - Wilcos Jock-
ey, was victorious in one of seven
divisions of the Ontario Sires
Stakes held at Orangeville Race-
way on Sunday. The two-year-old
pacing colt came from fourth at the
half mile marker and worked his
way to the top where he held on to
win by a head.
The horse is co -owned, trained
and driven by Jack Wray of Lon-
don. Hensall's John Taylor and
Wayne Munroe also have shares in
the fine youngster. -
Beat London
EXETER - The Exeter Kicks soc-
cer team won an exhibition game
against London recently by a 2-1
count.
Greg Geoffrey and David Farqu-
har scored for the locals who led 2-
0 at the half.
Knight wins 14th
annual shoot
KIPPEN - The difference was
just a matter of inches.
Sunday afternoon, Dresden's
Tom Knight hit a perfect 25 -of -25
16 -yard targets to beat Jamie Cald-
well of the hosting Kippen Gun
Club, winning the 'A' division of
the 14th Annual Kyle Cooper
shoot.
The 52 shooters at this years
event each had 100 shots at the
four -inch round clay disc. Knight
and Caldwell hit all 100 and went
into a shootoff where Caldwell
missed just once.
"There were two one hundreds,"
said Caldwell. "Myself and Knight,
I've done it four times this year."
Caldwell won the Kippen Gun
Club's high average this year with a
98.4 while Dan Crerar was close
behind at 96.2.
"It's just you and the target, it's
not like it's cards," said Caldwell of
his skill.
On Sunday, the three divisions
saw Bill Wylie hit 96 to win the 'B'
title while Bill Henderson was the
runnerup with 94 and hit 24 in the
shootoff.
In the 'C' group, Glen Curts was
the champ with 87 and Al Kyle de-
feated Bob Dodge in the shootoff
as the ninnerup.
The Kippen Gun Club dates back
to the 1930's but had a very low
participation for many years until it
was resurrected in 1977.
"It was roaring in the 1930's. We
started it back up for nostalgia,"
said Caldwell.

Royals win playoff opener
-- By Fred Groves
EXETER - It was certainly clas-
sic fastball Thursday night here as
the Exeter Royals edged Milverton
Magnums 1-0.
The Royals who finished with an
18-8 seasonal record, won the
playoff opener and headed into last
night's second game of the best -of -
three quarter -finals of the South
Perth Men's Fastball League on a
high note.
It was a pitchers battle as Exet-
er's Derwyn Hodgins allowed just
one hit while his counterpart, Dar-
win Erb gave up two.
The only run of the game came
in the bottom of the first inning
when Royals' first baseman Kevin
Lightfoot walked and after moving
to second on a perfect bunt by Dar-
ren Neil, scored on Mike Neil's
hard hit single up the middle.
Mike Neil had the only other Ex-
eter hit of the game, a one out sin-
gle in the fourth.
Hodgins has been on top of his
game since he beat St.Marys Se-
lects twice in the Exeter tourna-
ment.
"I thought we'd score more
runs," said Hodgins who struck out
22 of the 28 batters he faced.
"The ball's been moving pretty
good lately," he said modestly.
Hodgins set the side down in or-
der in the third, seventh, eighth and
ninth innings.
Behind him, the Royals didn't
have much to do defensively but
when called upon came up with the
big plays.
Second baseman Mike Desjar-
dine backhanded a hard hit ball by
Jamie Scott, turned and fired to
first base in the fourth.
In the next inning, third baseman
Steve Neil made a good play when
a ball took a bad hop but he han-
dled it.
Erb meanwhile struck out 10 and -
allowed one walk.
"It's the best I've seen him pitch
this year," said Hodgins of Erb.
Exeter coach Fred Cook would
have liked to see a few more hits
but thought both Erb and Hodgins
were outstanding.
"It was a classic game of fast -
ball," said Cook who said there
would be more hits in game two.
- "The way Derby (Hodgins) is
throwing right now I can't see them
getting much off of him."
Although the Royals did win,
Cook did hint however his offence
might be depending on Hodgins a
Little too much.
"I expected to get more hits. They
came ready to play but once the
game started and they saw how
Derby was throwing, everyone re-
laxed," said Cook.
He recalled that two years ago in
a playoff series against Milverton,
the Royals depended too much on
their pitching and lost the series.
"Everyone let down tonight as
soon as we got the run in the first
inning because they knew we were
going to win."
If Milverton was to tie the series
up last night, game three will be
played Thursday in Exeter.
During the regular season the two
teams split their two games but Ex-
eter won 7-0 during their tourna-
ment..
Milverton finished third overall
in the 19 team league with a 19-7
record, just four points behind the
St. Marys Selects.
Greys advance to
Huron -Perth finals
EXETER - After. defeating Crediton 8-4 in the third game of a best -of -
three semi-final last Tuesday, the Exeter Greys have advanced to the Hu-
ron -Perth Women's Fastball League finals. The Greys have since moved
on to face St. Paul's in the best -of -five final, and the first game was played
last night in Exeter, with results unavailable at press time, , - ,
Prior to Tuesday's game, Grey's coach Ron Westinan said ate, was un-
impressed with his team's hitting during their Game Two performance in
Crediton, which saw them shut out 3-0.
"We gave up some runs and then just couldn't get them back," said
Westman. "Crediton played really well defensively, and we hit too many
fly balls."
Westman set about to correct that aspect of the game, by bringing in a t -
ball stand for warm-up, prior to Tuesday evenings finale. The move ap-
parently paid off.
Crediton played tough, retiring the side in order in three separate in-
nings, but offensively stranded eight runners over the course of the game.
"Exeter has a strong aggressive team. When we play them, it always
seems that whoever makes the fust error and gives the opponent the edge
comes up with the win. We didn't have any problem hitting Exeter's Patti
Down, it was just trying to come up with some key hits at the appropriate
time" says Crediton's Deb Lord. 'Mental errors have really plagued us
this year. Next year we hopeto have some of our regulars back which will
certainly help us on and off he field".
Exeter profited from a four -run inning in their half of the sixth, to blow
the game open.
Exeter took a 2-0 lead in the second when a triple by Carla Wolfcamp
_drove in Georgina Reynelds and Diane Willis who had both singled.
Defense then took over as neither team could muster more than one hit
over the next two innings.
In the fifth, the Grey's scored two more as Patti Down and Cheri Carter
singled and doubled respectively, and then came home on a single from
Lisa Henderson. Exeter added some insurance in the sixth, scoring four
more times.
Crediton managed to get the bats going in their half of the seventh, as
four runs crossed the plate. Mary McKillop and Kelly Prouse both sin-
gled, scoring on a double by pitcher Carol Windsor. Windsor scored on a
single by Jane Bowley, who later stole second and came home on Deb
Lord's single.
