Hoffmans top shooters at Regional Games held in Grand Bend GRAND BEND - Pat Hoffman, a resident of Grand Cove Estates just outside of G _ Bend. was a it -surprised- at her performance here Monday at the Seniors Re- gional Games. She won first place in the ladies darts competition just beating out London's Ida Casciano. Over 140 seniors competed in darts, euchre and shuffleboard at the local Legion while Bayview Golf Club in St. Joesph's was the site of golf, lawn bowling was held in Exeter and five -pin bowling in Lucan. "I think it's more fun than any- thing but everyone does their darn- dest to win," said Hoffman after she won four of five games. Her husband Jack, was also very successful taking home the silver medal in the men's group. They both play twice a week and when you ask Pat which one of them is better, there's no doubt at all. "Jack, by far, he's a very good dart player,' said Pat. The Hoffman's were not the only local competitors to bring home plaques from the one -day event. Grand Bend's Henry Wilmink and Tom Hindle won the silver in the shuffleboard with Fanny and Reuben Gingerich of Ailsa Craig taking the bronze. Out at Bayview, Vera Morrison of Grand Bend was first in the 'C' flight of the ladies golf event. Organizer Ron Dann was very pleased with the number of partici- pants. He said every other year there are provincial games but since this was not one of them, d0 cided to host a regional event. 1074 ..„ • 4081140 Organizational Meeting Ontario champs - Jacklyn Wright, right; Andrea Weigand and Laura Pearson, are still the Ontario jun- ior ladies champions. For Wright and Weigand, both 14, it's the third straight title and the second for Pearson, 13. In Belleville, they once again de- feated the trio from Dunnville in the best -of -three series. Unfortu- nately, Dunnville was the only oth- er junior aged (under 21) girls team competing. "People still think it's a seniors game," said Wright. "Nobody is really in to it. There's not a big rush to go out and play." While there may be a few mys- teries to be answered as to why few young people lawn bowl, Wet- gand knows why she has been in- volved in the sport for the last three years. "I think it's fun. The next challenge for the Exeter girls will be the Ontario novice championships in Toronto this weekend. Novice is for teams with five years or less lawn bowling ex- perience, so age is not a barrier. "We'll be playing older people and that will be tough," said Pear- son. There may be a little pressure on these three girls, but don't be sur- prised if they come back with more gold medals. Not yet; not for you, anyway. That sentiment was expressed to describe late fall, when the leaves are pretty well gone off the trees and the crop was in and there wasn't much to do but wait for winter. But this is not a great time of year for me. Most of the heat of summer is over, and it hasn't started to get cold yet, and everybody is basking in the late days of summer. Fur- naces and air conditioning are not high on people's shop- ping lists right now. I can't make any money when everybody is comfortable. "Ta, „Ay BAILEY'S OF HENSALL LTD.
