Blyth company gives Kirkton performance
KIRKTON - The Blyth Festival
Young Company took their show
on the road 'I huesday, travelling to
Kirkton with their collaborated
work, The Polar Bear Swim: An
Environmental Collective.
The group was received warmly
by children of the Kirkton Library,
during an hour-long, afternoon per-
formance. Following a perfor-
mance in Goderich, Wednesday,
the company made the trek to
Kirkton before returning to Blyth
for a five -performance schedule
through Saturday.
The play, lead by a strong narra-
tion from Heather Morton, is a col-
lage of stories and songs about the
environment. Jennifer Brewin,
who directed the play along with
Aliso Palmer, said it is the first
time that the young company has
worked on a collective piece.
"And it was hard" said Stacey
Hlusiak, in her second year with
the company. "There are so many
conflicting and creative ideas."
Because the piece is a collective,
it has no script and is actually more
of a collection of scenes than a
play. The work revolves around
the central character of Heron,
played by !Cavan Smith, who is
content to live in a tree in the for-
est. When the possibility arises
that bet tree may be cut down, she
finds herself confronted with devel-
opment companies, environmental-
ists, fanners, poets and prophets, all
of whom offer new perspectives
and judgements.
The play invites many improvi-
sations anti, according to company
members, is constantly changing.
"Everyone wanted something dif-
ferent," said Renee Devereaux, a
sixteen -year-old Seaforth native en-
joying her first year with the com-
pany. "It's great because it's so
spontaneous it provokes creativity."
Environmentally, the play leans
away from the common recycle, re-
duce, re -use motif, and focuses
upon making the audience aware of
how connected we are to the plan-
et's demise. Examined are factors
such as upsetting the food chain by
eliminating one of its components.
The end result projected is the col-
lapse of the entire system.
As Hlusiak said, "If we don't start
focussing in on that, connecting
with and doing something about it,
we're going to have a senous prob-
lem."
The title, Polar Bear Swim,
seems a little misleading initially,
with many misinterpreting the play
as one for children. It appears defi-
nitely geared to a more mature au -

diene e, but the company has a way
of keeping it simple and light-
hearted, to the point that children
are able to interpret and relate.
"We didn't want all doom and
gloom," said Devereaux. "That's
one of the things we did agree on
right off the bat."
The young company is constantly
- toying with new ideas. carefully

adding and subtracting workable
segments. Currently they are in the
process of integrating a scene, us -

They hope to deal not only with
problems on the shoulder, but also
with inner struggles. The end re-
sult will revert back to the environ-
ment, but also show how people
feel about themselves.
