(33') Council not happy with Minister's response on t i re storage Times -Advocate, August 14, 1991 Page 21 DENFIELD LIVESTOCK SALES LTD. "Your local livestock auction" EXETER - The Town of Exeter finally received a reply from the Ministry of the Environment to their concerns about used tire stor- age and disposal. Town administrator Rick Hundey told council last Tuesday that he was a bit disappointed that Minister Ruth Grier's letter indicated funds from the tire tax have more general uses than just recycling. "It's Less than what they collect on an annual basis and that's where I have a problem," agreed council- lor Ben Hoogenboom. Councillor Dorothy Chapman noted most progress on the tire is- sue has been to tighten up regula- tions for used tire storage, regula- tions which she said are an additional hassle to businesses, not a benefit. "It doesn't help anyone who has tire storage," said Chapman. Works superintendent Glenn Kells said Algoma's storage pile is still within legal limits under the regulations. Councillor Dave Urlin pointed • out in addition to the unpopular $5 tire tax, there is a 15 cent per day tax on all car rentals, and still there is not a comprehensive plan to dis- pose of used tires in Ontario. Tire storage became a heated— Is--sue in Exeter in 1990 after local businesses with used tire stockpiles were told they were in violation of storage regulations, but found themselves unable to dispose of the used rubber. Council brought the issue to the attention of then -premier David Pe- terson on his election tour to Exet- er, much to the chagrin of local Liberal supporters.
