Express still alive
LISTOWEL - Although the Exet-
er Express did not make it to the
Great Lakes Senior Baseball
League championship, they have
got their sights set on a bigger title.
Last Tuesday night the Express
beat Seaforth 7-4, eliminating them
in the best -of -three series. Exeter
will travel to Owen Sound on Sat-
urday and play host to the same
club the following day.
The winner will advance to the
Ontario Baseball Association D' fi-
nal tournament to be held Labour
Day weekend in Tillsonburg.
Against Seaforth, the Express
slipped behind 2-0 but came back
in die bottom of the third inning
and got four runs on three hits, two
errors, a walk and a stolen base.
This past weekend, Exeter trav-
elled to Listowel where they lost
two games and won one.
Kincardine 9, Exeter 8
The fust game for the Express
went right to the final out. They
were trailin* 9-6 in the top of the
seventh inning and got a pair of
runs.
Designated hitter Steve Meurer
singled, stole second and scored on
Marty Merner's base hit. He moved
on Brian Rivard's single and scored
on a wild pitch.
Marty Memel- was the big hitter
in this game as the Express' short-
stop had three base hits. Dave
Shaw hit a single and a fourth run
homer.
Exeter sent ten batters to the plate
in the first inning and scored five
runs.
Exeter 9, Seaforth 7
Just like they did earlier in the
week, the Express beat Seaforth.
Three runs in the bottom of the
sixth inning helped Exeter as they
came from behind to win this one.
In the sixth frame, Rivard led off
with a single and then with two out,
Kevin Hern and Kevin Drager hit
back-to-back base hits and Scott
Russell hit a game winning double.
Russell was the big hitter on the
day as the third baseman went 4 -
for -4 including a pair of doubles. In
all, the Express pounded out 14
hits.
Listowel 8, Exeter 4
This controversial contest saw
Exeter's Barry Baynham ejected
from the game. He was involved in
a fifth inning altercation with a Lis-
towel player.
Doug Fairbairn who has been in-
jured all season had to come in and
coach Glen Thurman had to replace
Don McDonald late in the game.
McDonald had a good outing as
he led off the game with a triple
and scored on Shaw's single.
Co-op Juniors
off to OBA
final tournament
in Creemore
EXETER - The Exeter Co -Op
Juniors are off to the Ontario Base-
ball Association Junior D' champi-
onship tournament.
Monday night they eliminated
Lucan and will now prepare for the
provincial final August 24-25 in
Creemore.
The twoe series es between
Lucan and Exeter saw the Co -Op
Juniors win 20-6 Sunday followed
the next night by a closer 10-5 win.
Both games were played at the Al-
vin Willert Field in Exeter.

PORT ELGIN - It was a very
busy weekend on the ball dia-
monds for three Exeter teams as
they took part in tournaments in
Goderich, Mitchell and Port Elgin.
The peewees were in the Ontario
Baseball Association qualifier and
won a pair of games and lost two
others. They started with a 13-11
win over Kincardine, Jeff Glavin
was the winning pitcher.
Against Clinton, pitchers Mike
France and Mark Parsons helped
Exeter to a 10-9 win. Port Elgin
had lots of hits in a 10-0 win over
Exeter and Walkerton bet Exeter
16-6.
Minor tyke: In Mitchell on the
weekend, several local teams tOOk -
part and the Lucan #2 team was
second in the gold division while
Lucan #1 was third. In the silver di-
vision Exeter #2 placed second and
in the bronze, Exeter #1 was fust
and Dashwood came third.
The Exeter 31 team received a
plaque from Petro Canada for being
the most sportsmanlike team.

Galbraith and Stephen Wraith won
their age divisions.
Major tyke: At the OBA qualifi-

There will be a lot of ball at the
Alvin Willert Field on Sunday as
not only will the juniors be wrap-
ping up their tournmanet but the
Exeter Express senior team is
scheduled to have at least one game
as well.
