Grand Bend to London tour
Cyclists to raise $50,000 for MS
GRAND BEND - Hundreds of
cyclists from across Ontario will
become 'pedal pushers' this
weekend when they take part in
the Noranda Forest Multiple
Sclerosis 150 Bike Tour.
Beginning Saturday morning at
8 a.m. the cyclists will leave in
groups of 50 from the Lambton
Heritage Museum. Making their
way through Huron and Middles-
ex counties, they will conclude
their 75 mile -route at the Univer-
sity of Western Ontario.
The following day, they will
mount up early in the morning
once again and make their way
back to the museum. (see at-
tached map for route).
"There are check points along
the way, there will be a long
Grand Bend

string Of riders," said regional co-
ordinator Kevin Smith.
He said nearly 300 riders are
expected and they have spent
several weeks getting pledges
and Smith said they will raise
close to $50,000.
"It's going so well we're going
to have two tours in Southwest-
ern Ontario next year," said
Smith.
There are 13 MS tours across
Canada this year and Smith said
they will raise close to $2 mil-
lion.
This year's co -chairpersons are
Mary -Anne Elie and Ann Hutchi-
son.
Elie was first told she had MS
in 1982 and although she relies
on a wheelchair for mobility, is

Skydivers not scared off by recent deaths
GRAND BEND - Despite the deaths of four skydiv-
ers in two separate incidents recently, parachutists
coming to Grand Bend don't seem to be scared by the
accidents.
"I think most people are aware there are risks in-
volved in parachuting," said Bob Wright of the Grand
Bend Sport Parachuting Centre.
"It may sound a little crude but perhaps that's the at-
traction some people have for it. I think if they knew it
was 100 percent safe a lot of people wouldn't do it be-
cause it wouldn't be quite so exciting."
He said the accident in Wellesley was a fluke. Three
men from the Adventure Skydiving Club died on July
27 while on the same day in Gananoque another jump-
er was killed.
Wright explained that he received reports of the
Wellesley accident and said the men there were not do-
ing anything reckless or dangerous.
"They were doing a tandem jump which means an in-
structor was jumping with a beginner attached to him.
It's relatively common way to do it, but we don't do it
here."
He said the tandem jump is done all over the Wotld
but in this case the parachute deployed accidently and
they could not get their emergency chute open.
The instructor was Steve West who competed in the
Canadian Nationals held in Grand Bend last summer.
A photographer, Kelvin Brundrett, who was jumping
with them, tried to untangle there parachutes and he
was also killed.

First inning keys win
EXETER - Five hits in the first
inning spelled victory for the Exet-
er Royals on Thursday as they han-
dled the Mitchell Mets 6-1, improv-
ing their South Perth Men's Fastball
League record to 13-8.
The Royals tagged Mitchell start-
ing pitcher Bob Harris for all six
runs in the opening inning. But
Harris settled down and after that
went head-to-head with Exeter
hurler Derwyn Hodgins.
It appeared as though Thursday's
game was a blow out when Royals'
leadoff batter Dan Heywood
walked and went to second on a
perfect bunt by Darren Neil.
Mitchell got their defensive sig-
nals crossed up and Neil was safe
at first. Catcher Brian Noyes also
bunted to load the bases. Graham
Nesbitt stepped to the plate and
connected with a base hit that
scored two runs.
The rally continued when Steve
Neil doubled to make it 4-0.
Brother Mike tagged a home run
and the Royals were well on their
way to their 13th win of the sea-
son.
Hodgins pitched five innings
and had 11 strikeouts before giv-
ing way to Dennis Carty. Carty
had a good outing striking out five
and retired the side in order in
both the eighth and ninth innings.
Mitchell's only run came in the
seventh when John Taylor_hit, a
solo home run.
Exeter Royals set to host
10th Annual tournament
EXETER - Defending champion Oakville Express
return to Exeter this weekend to compete in the 10th
Annual Exeter Royals Fastball Tournament at the
South Huron Recreation Centre.
It took the Express two games to beat Palermo for
the championship during the double -elimination tour-
nament. The first game was a slim 7-6 margin while
the clincher was 7-1.
"They are the champions until someone beats them.
We've got as good a chance as anyone," said Royals
coach Fred Cook.
"We've got Jeff Shipley playing with us and he'll
probably be a designated hitter."
Last year, the Royals were eliminated in a 3-2 game
against St. Pauls. They beat Strathroy 6-0 and Fullar-
ton 5-2. Exeter lost its opener 3-2 to Petrolia.
Exeter, vying for a spot in the 'A' divisional playoffs
of their own South Perth Men's Fastball League, will
meet London's Bonnie's Dugout Friday night on dia-
mond two at 8 p.m.
Also kicking off the 16 -team tournament will be
Fullarton and Cambridge also at 8 p.m. on diamond
one.
Fullarton, Exeter, St. Agatha, Milverton, St. Pauls
and St. Marys Selects all belong to the South Perth
league.
"Milverton, St. Pauls and St. Marys, they're pretty
strong, they're in the top five in our league," said Cook.
Surprisingly, only six teams are returning from last
year.
"There were at least two or three more that wanted
in," said Cook of the tournament's popularity.
Although there are 16 teams, 10 of them newcomers
and more do want in, Cook said the possibility of ex-
panding is slim.
"Not unless we went to a long weekend. We're the
only tournament during this weekend."
Tournament schedule:
Friday - Fullarton vs. Cambridge, diamond one, 8
p.m.; Exeter vs. Bonnie's Dugout, diamond two, 8 p.m;
Belmore vs. St. Agatha, diamond one, 9:30 p.m.; Mil-
verton vs. Petrolia, diamond two, 9:30 p.m.
Saturday - Bloomingdale vs. St. Pauls, diamond one,
9 a.m.; Oakville vs. Merlin, diamond two, 9 a.m.; Wa-
terford vs. Ingersoll, diamond one, 10:30 a.m.; St. Mar-
ys vs. Scarborough, diamond two, 10:30 a.m.

Ramage
tourney
LONDON - One hundred and
fifty-two golfers took to Greenhills
in Lambeth on Wednesday, to par -1 i
ticipate in the Rob Ramage Make -
A -Wish Golf Classic. Various
foursomes were padded with NHL
stars, but when all was said and
done, a team comprised of some of
our own local talent came out on
top.
Garry Kline, Ken Tapper, Jim
Bedard and Richard Schilbe
seemed pretty much at home
amongst players such as Toronto
Maple Leafs' Wendal Clark and
Vincent Damphousse, and John
McIntyre of the LA Kings, shoot-
ing an impressive 14 -under par
during the Texas Scramble. Their
score of 58 was good enough for a
first place tie with a team which in-
cluded former Hartford Whaler
Steve Stoyanovich, The tie was
eventually broken by retrogretion,
with the Stoyanovich team win-
ning due to a better score on the
18th hole.
"There was some really good golf
out there," said Kline. And every-
body had a good time raising mon-
ey for a very worthy cause."
Organizers reported a total of
527,000 raised, 59,000 of which
came through a charity auction of
sports memorabilia, held Tuesday
evening. The money will be donat-
ed to the Make -A -Wish Founda-
tion, a charitable group which
grants wishes to children inflicted
with incurable disease and not ex-
pected to live past age 18.
"We did fairly well," said Kline
modestly. "But 1 thought we had it
when we cagled our last hole."
The team, sponsored by Bright's
Wines, had to endure some last
minute changes, as Jim Bedard was
called in to replace regular Phil
Overholt, who was unable to at-
tend. Kline lives in Exeter while
Bedard, Schilbe and Overholt hail
from Zurich.
