Mudcats slowly leaving
Southern Counties league
I
n just five short
weeks the Exeter
Mohawks will be
opening training
camp.
The local Senior 'A'
Hockey Club is one of the
most successful in the
province, they've got a
track record to prove it.
With that success comes a little bit of respect.
It appears as though the Ontario Hockey Association
has listened to some complaints the Mohawks have
voiced and hockey fans may or may not be pleased with
the results.
Following Wednesday's annual general meeting, it was
announced the Mohawks will only be playing the Dunn-
ville Mudcats twice; a home -and -home format.
"Unfortunately we're still playing Dunnville," said Mo-
hawks' vice-president John Pryde.
"Dunnville will be playing an interlocking schedule
with the northern Senior 'A' league." Teams in that loop
are Lakeshore, Crecmore, Elora, Shelburne and Durham.
Exeter will play four games (two away and two at
home) against Ingersoll, Dorchester and Aylmer. The re-
mainder of the 28 -game schedule will be interlocking
with the Seaway Cyclone League.
Fans will remember the playoff series last year between
the Mudcats and the Mohawks in which tempers were
heightened both on and off the ice. Several of the Exeter
players were cut severely by uncontrollable Dunnville
sticks.
"Exeter, Aylmer and Dorchester made application to
transfer to the Seaway Cyclone League for the upcoming
season. The simple reason was the distance to travel to
Dunnville and incidents on and off the ice.
Dunnville for the balance of the summer has seen them-
selves as a team with no league and have given al. the
other teams dde assurance their act will be cleaned up."
In other words, it's no secret Exeter and the other, teams
in the Southern Counties League want to kick Dunnville
out of their league. Unfortunately, next year the northern
league will havg to put up with them.
"While we didn't totally get rid of them, we have suc-
ceeded in impressing upon them that they have to clean
their act up."
There arc still numerous people however who go to
games just to watch fights. it's amazing how many people
would flock to the South Huron Recreation Centre just to
see the Mudcats and the Mohawks battle,
New exec members: Wednesday the Mohawks an-
nounced they have four new executive members in Chris
Ferguson, Paul Kerslake, Leroy Hem and Luanne Keelan.
Gabby Mol remains as president.
"We're pleased to announce the coaching -managing duo
of Dave Revington and Al Gates will return for another
season," said Pryde,
"It adds an element of'stability."
As with all hockey teams come the fall, it's uncertain
who will be wearing the yellow and black of the Mo-
hawks. Les Arts, a rushing defenceman with the Mo-
hawks had a tryout in Toronto with a Holland team and
there is a good possibility he will be playing in Europe.
"Although. we -do 'have definite-€omR tn%Qnts; we're -
anticipating the majority of the plyyers will be back."
The OHA meeting in Toronto in June saw a very poor
turnout of senior hockey clubs. Normally that would indi-
cate a lack of interest but the Mohawks are hoping to see
their tournament return.
"At recent senior league meetings, a number of teams
have indicated a willingness to participate this year."
The date of that will be January 3-5.

My favorite season of the year is fall. Hockey training
camps open and baseball playoffs are in full swing...on the
sport of baseball the recent Honda Hit -Run -Throw compe-
tition in Exeter had 97 participants and Wayne Hamather
of the local Honda dealership reports $145 has been donat-
ed to the Exeter Baseball Association.
