Several teams found they were unable to score points in later eveil,ts in the day, simply because they no longer had swimmers qualified to compete. In order to help swell the ranks, teams were putting parents and lifeguards into the open -class events at the end of the day in order to rack up some valuable points, as well as to add a more lighthearted end to the day. Nevertheless, the weather was perfect for a day beside the pool, even if the scores of spectators were forced to watch from behind the fence. Many praised the tight organization of the meet, right down to details like having two timers on each lane, with a third timer to triple -check the heat lead- er. Times -Advocate, July 31 1991 Page 15 The fastest 25m time of the day was clocked by Viki Carter of the Vanastra team who covered the length of the pool in just 19:50 sec- onds in the girls' 11&12 butterfly event, outpacing the boys and all freestyle competitors. The fastest 50m time went to Exeter's Colin Bowers in the boys' 13&14 free- style: two lengths in 32.84 sec- onds. The quickest time for 100m was recorded by Rob McLellan of Vanastra with a time of 1:13.76 for his four lengths in the boys' open freestyle event. Exeter competitors to distinguish themselves during the competition included the boys' 11&12 medley relay team of Brad Tieman, Aaron Prest, Lucas Forrest and Simon Baarbe who placed first in their event. Lucan Forrest also placed first in the boys' 11&12 IOOm individual medley event, and again in the 50m breast stroke. Colin Bowers as mentioned above, won the 50m freestyle in his category, as well as the 50m breast stroke. Courtney Oke won the girls' 8 and under 25m backstroke, nearly seven seconds ahead of second place Sarah Baarbd. Courtney Oke also won in the girls' 8 and under 25m breast stroke, and again in the 25m butterfly. Express defense improves KINCARDINE Aftergoing through several games earlier this season with some very high scores the Exeter Express have tightened up on their defence. Thursday night in Kincardine, the Express blanked the hosting team 3-1 in Great Lakes Senior Baseball League action. After five scoreless innings, Ex- eter got on the board when Rob Dickey walked, stole second, and scored on D'Arcy Martin's base hit. Martin scored on Marty Memer's single. Exeter added one more in the top of the ninth when Barry Baynham led off with a single, advanced on Merner's ground out and scored on Pete Heeney's single. The improved defense will cer- tainly be helpful when the Express travel to Listowel on August 9-11 for the league championship tour- nament. Exeter manager Joe Fulop said it's the first year for the tournament. "In past year's we've gone a best - of -three series. Last year's isn't over yet," he said. A year ago Exeter met Lakeside in the finals but it was October when they were playing and after the Express winning game one of the series, it was delayed and is still not finished. "We haven't tried it before. This way it's faster, it would be better if it was a double elimination," said Fulop. At the league tournament, Exeter will meet north division rival Kin- cardine while Listowel plays Sea - forth. That will determine a divi- sion winner which will play the south group for the league title. As far as OBA is concerned, Ex- eter will meet Seaforth and the win- ner will either play the London Kings or Strathroy to determine the OBA 'D' representative who goes to the Labour Day tournament in Till- sonburg, — - Tuesday night in Exeter, visiting Listowel came -from -behind to plate four runs in the eighth inning and win 7-6. Earlier in the evening, the two teams played out the final inning of a game which was tied 6-6 back on July 10. Steve Farquhar scored the winning run as Dashwood won to make it official at 7-6. Exeter also managed to beat Salt - ford twice for four big wins on the week. The big second inning started when Mark Russell led off with a triple. Ben Riley, Doug Clark, Fred Gregus and Jason Clarke all singled and Scot Russell, Jeff Keller and Shawn McFalls walked. Mark Russell got up for the sec- ond time in the inning, punched a single and came home on Dave Schwindt's homer. Friday night in Exeter, the locals beat Saltford 16-14.
