Royals improve, beat Sebringville
By Fred Groves
EXETER - It appears as though
• the mid -summer blues are gone for
the Exeter Royals.
The local South Perth Men's
Fastball League team had been
struggling but, on Thursday,
blanked the Sebringville Juniors 6-
• 0. Exeter jumped into a 3-0 lead at
the end of the second inning and
never looked back.
They are 11-7 and hope to in-
crease that this week when they
travel to Sebringville for a game
against the Royals on Wednesday
and in a rare Friday night home
game when they suit up against the
Shakespeare Colts.
Fred Cook, who took over coach-
ing for Graham Nesbitt recently,
said all teams go into a bit of a
slump, his Royals being no excep-
lion.
"In the 15 years I've been doing
this, it's happened pvery year. I
think it will turn around, said
Cook.
Exeter is once again vying for a
spot in the 'A' playoffs. The top
eight teams in the league go into
that grouping while the next eight
are in 'B'. Three teams don't quali-

fy.
"We have 11 games left, we'll
have to win six to get in the 'A',"
explained Cook. He thinks Exeter
has a good chance of making the
'A'.
"Actually they are pretty good.
I'm told there are 12 teams with
nine losses or less but they'll have
to play each other."
As far as the coaching shuffle is
concerned, It was decided that Nes-
bitt could be more valuable to the
team if he would just concentrate
on playing.
"We'd rather have him playing
than coaching. It will give him
more time to play,' said Cook.
"Coaching won't change the
EXETER - Cherie Carter nearly
knocked the cover off the ball last
Tuesday night as the Greys' right -
fielder wcnt 3 -for -4 at the plate
and helped the Exeter Greys to a
13-6 win over Crediton in Huron
Perth Ladies Fastball League ac-
tion.
She doubled in the second inning
to drive in Dianne Willis and Carla
Wolfkamp, sent a home run blast
to deep centre field in the fourth
and singled in the sixth inning.
Gayle Beuerman had a pair of
timely hits as she had a double and
a single mid -way through the game
which scored four runs. Her first
trip to the plate, Beuerman tripled
but was left stranded at third.
First baseman Lisa Henderson
also had a good game, making a
couple of key plays defensively
and hitting a double and two sin-
gles. In the sixth, she tried to
stretch her double into a triple but
was thrown out on a good throw by
Crediton centre fielder Deb Lord.
Exeter had a 3-1 lead in the third
but Crediton -got throe of their own
in the fourth to go ahead. A wild
pitch scored both Kelly Prouse and
Joclle Lamport.
Mental errors seem to pla;ue the
Crediton squad. After coming on
strong in the first three innings the
team seemed to fall apart letting
Exeter take the large margin.
Teresa Van Raay and Prouse led
the way for their team at the plate.
Going three for four at the plate but
being stranded twice seemed to add
to Crediton's problems.

Theresa McGee got on base two
times and Deb Lord, Mary McKil-

team. The players' attitude will
have to turn of around. I've noticed
more enthusiasm the last four
games," he added.
Against the Juniors on Thursday,
Dennis Carty led off the third with
a single followed by two more base
hits by Mike Neil and Derwyn
Hodgins. Mike Desjardine walked
and Darren Neil connected with a
base hit.
In the sixth inning, the Royals got
two more when Kevin Lightfoot
walked, moved to second on Dar-
ren Neil's bunt, and scored on Brian
Noyes' double.
Both Lightfoot and Darren Neil
scored in the eighth when Noyes
had his third hit of the game.
Hodgins went the distance on the
mound for the Royals as he struck
out 13. -
Tournament action: On the
weekend, Exeter travelled to Petro-
lia and returned with a win and a
pair of losses.
They started out with a"41**w;tn
over Camlachie and just missed
winning their second game but suf-
fered a 1-0 loss at the hands of the
London Police. Game three saw
Camlachie come back and win 5-0.

The tieing run came when Mike
Munro singled to score Coughlin
who had gone to second after Greg
Boshard grounded out.
"Lucan's got a scrappy team. All
around they're good hitters, said
Listowel coach Keith Bender.
The offensive rally continued
when Stacey Evans singled and the
bases were loaded when Will Pier-
son was hit by a pitch. Leadoff hit-
ter Chris Smith tagged a 2 and -1
pitch through the hole and then
Paul Smith followed with a bloop
single to shallow centre making it
6-4.
By then the game was out of
reach for Listowel whose record
dipped to 8-10. After Andrew Ver-

came back to beat visiting Listowel

Baseball League action Sunday af-

Improving their record to 12-8,
Lucan fell behind 3-0 at the top of
the first inning as Listowel's Andy
Coughlin and Don McNichol
tagged back-to-back doubles off of
starting pitcher Brad Coughlin.
But the home team came on in
the fifth as they wore down Lis-
towel starting pitcher Nathan
Bender.
"I think he was tired. We didn't
hit the ball very hard, but we hit
the holes," said Lucan coach Walt
Parkinson.
Steve Nixon started things roll-
ing for Lucan in the fifth when he
lined one back to Bender. It went
off of his glove and Nixon had a

"We played decently but pitching
has been a problem; said Bender.
Although Lucan did manage to
come on strong in the fifth, they
had troubles clearing the bases as
they left the bases loaded more than
once.
"We couldn't get anybody home.
We haven't got any real power, it's
been like that all season," said Par-

Huron ovunfjr league
into fourth season
ZURICH - A lack of fastball
teams might have been a blessing
of sorts for the Huron County
Fastball League.
Four years ago, fastball in many
communities within the county,
found they were losing teams so
instead of all the teams dropping
out of the sport, a new league was
formed.
Sunday afternoon in Zurich, the
annual all-star game was played
with the south, edging the north,
4-2. Teams from the south are Zu-
rich CG's, Zurich Rangers, Exeter
Sooners, Bayfield Thunder, Fran-
cistown Flyers and the Clinton
Selects.
1 would say it's a high quality
recreational fastball league, said
league president Doug Bach.
The past three years has seen
the Selects win the league title
twice. There are 13 teams in the
two -division league.
•
Bach said there were two rea-
sons why the league was created..
"A lot of the other guys retired
and with the increase swing to
slo-pitch, we had less teams."
"Prior to that, most teams
played in their own league in
their own towns; he added.
The league has a wide range of
ages as Bach noted there are
some who are teenagers playing
against guys in their 40's.
Future games: While the
league schedule is winding down,
Bayfield took on Zurich CG's
Monday night while Francistown
Flyers met the Bears from Sea -
forth.
On Wednesday, the Flyers and
the Rangers meet in Zurich at
7:30 p.m. followed by CG's host-
ing Walton Brewers at 9 p.m.
The Rangers will travel to Brus-
sels on Sunday fora 7:30 start.
