The wind has stopped blowing, and ro- mance fails to exist. Sounds somber and despairing, but Sean Dixon's The End of the World Romance is just the opposite. With the use of myths, dreams, stories, and unusual costumes and set design, the playwright trans- forms the painful truth about growing up into a positive, sensitive tale worth believing. The play opens with Quin (Peter Smith) and his daughter, Max (Julie Stewart) discussing a trip to the Big City to look for their wife/mother who twelve years earlier hit Quin so hard he flew 2,000 miles away and landed in Winnipeg, and who allowed Max, her balloon -holding baby daughter, to be carried away by the wind into the arms of her es- tranged husband in Manitoba. Upon their arrival to the Big City, the father -daughter duo discover Rose (Laurel Paetz) sitting on the win. For 4,197 days, she has cov- ered the wind with her skirt so that it will bring no harm to any more children. Little does she realize, however, her twelve -year-old daugh- ter is the only child left in the world. Even though their family situation is an odd one, Max tries desper- ately to rejoin her parents. A misanthropic black crow (Kevin Bundy) with a soft spot for children promises the re -unification of her parents if Max flies with him to the Other World. She accepts the offer, but the thought of losing their daughter again convinces the couple to face the brewing storm and their past differences in order to save the fami- ly. The playwrite's humour and story line are delightfully unique. No doubt you'll be able to decipher between reality and fantasy by the conclusion of the play, but I doubt you'll want to. Director Greg Spot- tiswood describes the play as a "simple story of a separated family who overcomes the odds and gets a chance to start over." Teo "sim- ple" of a statement for such a grand production. Julie Stewart and Peter Smith in The End of the World Romance. Laurence's Stone Angel opens at Blyth By Ray Lewis For fans of Canadian art, the Blyth Festival's production of Margaret Laurence's Stone Angel, is a must see. - --- --- Familiar to nearly every Canadian high school student, Laurence's classic novel has been adapted for the stage by James W. Nichol, and is currently enjoying its world premiere at Blyth. The Stone Angel is'a portrait of an impulsive yct proud woman, Ha- gar Shipley, who at the age of ninety reflects upon her life. Chronicles of her life are brought forth in the form of flashbacks, illuminating the difficult stages in the small prairie town of Manawaka. Following the death of her mother during Hagar's delivery, the child's early years are shaped by her father. In an attempt to break fret of her father's dominance, she marries a negligent farmer, Bram Shipley, against her father's wishes. She becomes a stubborn bride to Bram, a demanding mother to John and Marvin, and has long bouts with pride, stubbornness and self-reliance, especially in her widow- hood. Her final reckoning comes when faced with loss of control and a future at Silverthreads Nursing Home. "Pride was my wilderness, and the demon who led me there was fear," says Hagar. Barbara Chilcott, in her first appearance at Blyth, gives a wonderful dramatic performance as Hagar. Her ability to move from time frame to time frame, taking the audience with her, brings nothing but appre- ciation for her depth and range. The play comes in two acts of 85 minutes, but never docs it appear long with an ingenious mix of comic relief most would miss in the novel. Through the play's final stages, it becomes witty and charming and catches fire, partially due to the repartee between Hagar and her subjects, but morcso because of the innocence of actress Quycn Hua as Sandra Wong, and the whimsical abilities of Bruce McFee as Murray F. Lees, Mr. Troy and a host of others. The work of these three makes a trip to Blyth almost imperative, and when coupled with the technical wizardry which permits the flash - hacks in time, the play is a must.
