After starting the South Penh Men's Fastball League season off with a 6-1 jump, the Royals have lost their last three games and their record has now dropped to 10-8. Thursday night in Exeter, the Royals lost 4-3 to the midget -aged Stratford Memorials. The visitors took a big 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Royals got one back in the fourth, but a solo home run by Stratford second base- man Mike Gettler proved to be the difference. "I don't think we're playing up to our potential. We're taking teams too lightly," said Exeter catcher Brian Noyes. That potential is good as the Royals finished second to Shedden at the Melbourne Tournament and, a times, have looked like contend- ers. "We're not starting off early. We're finding ourselves down two or three runs," added Noyes. Stratford got to Exeter starting pitcher Dennis Carty in the first frame. Geuler was hit by a pitch, advanced to third by way of a wild pits `r and a stolen base and scored on Don Scott's single. Catcher Shawn Spenler doubled to bring Scott home and Spenler scored on Chris Dunn's hit. Carty settled down and struck out four batters and retired the side in both the third and fourth innings. Exeter got on the board when Noyes was safe on a fielders' choice and scored on Mike Desjar- dine blast which was good for a triple. The Royals left a runner stranded a second in the first inning, one at first in the third and left Desjardine Brian Noyes stranded at third. "We're not scoring runs when we have the chances," said Noyes. Derwyn Hodgins who came on to pitch for Carty in the fifth gave up a solo home run to Gettler in the eighth inning. Noyes walked in the bottom of the ninth inning and Jim Allison went in to pinch run. Allison scoted after Desjardine singled to collect his second rbi of the night. Billy Tremeer who ran for Mike Neil after he • singled, scored on a Stratford error. Sandy Hyde, run - for Desjardine was left at third base with none out. Basepaths:...The Royals are hosting their tournament on August 9-11...The league all-star game is set for early August...Hodgins has signed his 0.A.S.A. card with Shedden which means he will, not be eligibile to play for the Royals... After two complete innings, the automatic lights turned off at 11 p.m. and the game was finished which saw the local team on the winning side of a 36-1 score. All nine players off the Crediton squad crossed the plate a minimum of three times and four crossed five times. Theresa McGee who cleared the bases with a home run on one or her. trips to theplate was also the winning pitcher for the night. On Monday, Winthrop was to travel to Crediton to again meet the local ladies but forfeited the game due to lack of players. St. Marys 5, Exeter 4 A two -run lead wasn't enough as the Exeter Greys lost 5-4 last Tues- day night in St. Marys. Exeter was ahead 4-2 heading into the St. Marys bottom of the seventh and final inning but some mistakes on defence by the Greys resulted in them dropping just their second game of the season. Catcher Kendra Arthur gave the Greys a 1-0 lead at the top of the first inning when she scored off of Sandi Fremlin's ground out. Exeter added another one in the second when Dianne . Willis walked and came home on Carla WolfcaMp's single. Willis scored for the second time in the fourth after she singled. Shortstop Gayle Beuermann had a two -out base hit in the fifth frame and came home on Fremlin's triple. St. Marys had trouble scoring from third as they left a runner stranded in the third and again in the sixth inning. Exeter pitcher Pat- ti Down struck out Donna Jones to getout of the sixth, JA C K' S Plumbing and Heating (Exeter) Inc. Jack Maver (519) 235-0581 Thinking of Changing to Gas??
