Permits
decrease
EXETER - The number of
building permits issued in June
in Exeter, and their value are
way down compared to 1990.
Last month there were only
32 permits issued with a value
of $537,204. In 1990 that dollar
figure was more than doubled.
"June was the first real slow
month we've had compared to
last year," said deputy -reeve
Lossy Fuller.
There was also some concern
raised Monday night about the
number of vacancies of com-
mercial properties on Main
Street.
"Is no secret when you drive
down Main Street we have a
considerable vacancy," said
councillor Ben Hoogenboom.
Hensall
appoints
new fire chief
H,ENSALL - The village of Hen-
sall council approved a by-law at
Monday evening's meeting, ap-
pointing various officers to the
Hensel) Firc Department.
Fire chief Butch Hoffman an-
nounced that he had stepped down
as chief on June 30, but has agreed
to stay with the department until
year end. The move prompted
council to return former chief Jim
Hyde to the position. In addition,
Gary Maxwell has been appointed
as deputy chief, while Frank Var-
Iey, Ken Bruxer and Greg Camp-
bell were selected as the depart-
ment's new captains.
Council also authorized volun-
teer personnel and apparatus of the
department to leave the jurisdic-
tion, for which they retained, to
participate in the Huron County
Mutual Fire Aid Plan at the the dis-
cretion of the chief.
OPP seek
awareness of
after-hours
phone line
MOUNT FOREST - The OPP
• arc concerned that emergency call-
ers to local detachments outside
business hours arc facing needless
delays in getting police response.
Those who call their local de-
tachment before or after daily
hours have to have their calls re-
layed to the Mount Forest OPP
Communications Centre before an
officer can be dispatched. Conse-
quently. the OPP are asking people
to become aware of and make use
of the OPP toll-free number that
offers a direct link to the Mount
Forest centre.
The number, 1-800-265-2525 op-
erates 24 hours a day for residents
in Huron, Perth, Grey, Wellington
and Waterloo Counties, but during
normal hours of 8:30 am to 4:30
pm. you can get quicker results by
calling the detachment directly -
235-1300 for the Exeter OPP.
A special toll-free line for those
using TDD/ fY telephones for the
deaf can by reached by calling 1-
800-265-2529.
Exeter street renamed
EXETER - Upon request of Len
Veri, one of the streets in the Veri
Subdivision will be renamed.
After some discussion Monday
night, Exeter council agreed that
the name of the street will be
changed from Hazelton Drive to
Hazelton Lane.
"Mr. Veri has a right to request
this," said councillor Harry Klun-
gel.
In other business involving town
streets, the main street (Highway 4)
will be under construction for about
three weeks as it is being repaved.
The job, which will cost about
$285,000, ten percent being paid by
the town, will be done block by
block. There will be no parking on
either side of the street on the par-
ticular block where the work is be-
ing done one.
A four-way stop will be estab-
lished at the corners of Sanders and
Pryde.
"There is no where for people
who live on the south side of Sand-
ers to cross," said councillor Dave
Urlin.
Stephen Township`•
._.•
sets ..991 budget
CREDITON - Stephen Township
ratepayers can expect to be paying
a bit more taxes this year after
council approved its 1991 budget.
The general purpose budget is up
to $2.3 million this year, some 3.5
percent higher than last year, but
with the levies for Huron County
(up 8.3 percent), and the school
boards added in, public school sup-
porters will be seeing their tax bills
up 4.8 percent this year. Separate
school supporters will be seeing a
slightly higher increase of 5.9 per-
cent.
However, residents of the police
villages of Centralia, Crediton and
Dashwood will not be paying the
full township mill rates. Centralia
residents will be billed at 95 per-
cent of the township mill rate, with
Crediton and Dashwood at 75 per-
cent.
Stephen Township, with a popu-
lation over 4,000, several villages,
and the Huron Industrial Park,
boasts the second largest assess-
ment in Huron County, behind the
town of Goderich.
A request by Precious Blood
School to have no parking signs put
up on the north side of Sanders
Street and have a sidewalk built is
being considered by the police
committee.
No date for
meeting yet
EXETER - Although there is no
confirmed date, a public meeting
will be held in Exeter td see what
activities the local Lions Club
would like to propose for
McNaughton Park.
Since the Ausable Bayfield Con-
servation Authority owns the prop-
erty they arc concerned about what
those activities are.
"We're just waiting to see what
the (ABCA) board thinks of the
proposals," said ABCA communi-
cations manager Kathy Monk.
She said after the board reviews
the proposals, it will then contact
the Town of Exeter to hold a pub-
lic meeting. Monk said they hope
this will be a two-part meeting
which would include taking a
walking tour of the park.
