A good water supply will top your list of priorities if you don
live m an area that supplies city water to its customers. leanly,
safe water is a major concern as good water is essential to one's
health.
A well may be dug, bored, drilled or driven, depending on the
geology of the area and the depth at which the water -bearing for-
mation is found. As part of the construction, all or pan of the well
ts cased. This involves lining the sides of the well with a material
that will prevent the open hole from collapsing and prevent sur-
face water front moving into the well. Following completion the
well will be capped in a secure manner.
Digging a well was the usual method of construction before the
development of motor -driven boring or drilling machines. Dug
wells are used in areas where a dependable supply of grand wa-
ter exists at shallow depths. Beattie dug wells usually penetrate
the water -baring formation for a short distance many of them dry
up when the wateruble drops. As a result, many old dug wells are
being replaced by deeper more reliable drilled and bored wells.
